Mate 14 will not log in [Partly Solved]

I've tried LInux Mint Mate vers 14 and 14.1. Both will install and boot OK but I can not log in. Either it doesn't recognize my user name or my password but I've entered them correctly. I've used Mint since ver 6 and all was well but Mate doesn't log in. I hate Cinamon so I hope someone can point me...

Mate does not have a short cut in the control panel, they must have forgot it.... so go to the screen saver and at the bottom you'll the power manangement short cut.

I have a AMD Phenom II 6 core thurban 2.8Ghz and a GeForce GT240 video card. I have never been able to boot the live dvd for OpenSuse, Fedora nor Red Hat. I used to run LInux Mint 7 on my intel 24" iMac. All was well and I enjoyed Linux. When I installed Linux Mint 8, it would not boot again. My neighbor who uses a windows laptop also was using 7 but after the installation, he also could not boot into Linux. Apparently you changed the way it uses Grub...

MintBackUp may very well back up the hidden files in the home directory on other type systems but when I tried it on my iMac, the archives did NOT include the hidden files despite having checked off the square to have them included in the back up.
