Termy these work as couples uefi-gpt and bios-mbr.
You can use a gpt as storage on bios but you cannot install an os on gpt witout uefi and the original post obviously speaks of a new install.

If var/log is so big then something malfunctios and creates big logs. Or it's a log bug. You can delete but sooner or later will grow again.

The efi partition is less "breakable" than mbr plus the much better handling of partitions (how many) and also size.

Since android phones appeated people learned to work in non windows ways. If you give to someone a linux pc he will be just fine. Installing it's the difficult part.

No, you cannot do it safely and even if you do it and the system looks to work ok on the way you may meet corrupted files or functions. I've been there.
