Re: Libreoffice from Libreoffice?

Now there is a reason to be "up to date": https://www.libreoffice.org/about-us/security/advisories/cve-2024-3044/ I might switch to Flatpak from the PPA since I have no clue how long it will take until it gets the newer version. I just checked mine from the PPA and it is already patched.

Re: Dell laptop and Mint compatibility

Typing this on a Dell E7470 running Mint 21.3. Easy install and everything just works. Secure boot could be enabled but if it was in my case I disabled it. You may also need to disable TPM. Make sure that there is no secure boot password setup. It should be an easy install. Burn a live USB stick and...

Re: Libreoffice from Libreoffice?

I wouldn't spend too much time trying to get the primo install. If by some freak of nature you manage to do so, within 1 - 3 weeks it will no longer be the tip of perfection. It simply isn't worth chasing that - especially on software that has hundreds of features I don't even use  If you re...

Re: Libreoffice from Libreoffice?

there was something that LO added and I enjoyed that was not in the distro version so that is why I changed it. Gee, call me dense, but that doesn't make sense to me. If you change "enjoyed" to "disliked" then it would make sense to me. You changed from the distro version to a P...

Re: Handbrake 1.5.1 where to get a copy?

I tried the code and it installed version 1.3.1 (x86_64) so any ideas how I get version 1.5.1 (x86_64) ???? What version of Mint are you using? I am on Mint Cinnamon 21.3 and use Handbrake. Reading this thread caused me to look and discovered that I had installed the Flatpak 1.7.3. Removed that and...

Libreoffice from Libreoffice?

I like both Mint and the Libreoffice teams. However, I chose to use the Libreoffice PPA shown below and am quite confused regarding the description shown when update manager offered me an update today. Seems to me like some of the extended functionality mentioned would do nothing for Mint and I know...

Minor annoyance. Is it me, Libreoffice, or Nemo?

This just does not seem right to me and I don't know if I am doing something wrong or if that is just the way it is in Mint. I have several .csv files I want to work with. I shift click to select the ones I want and then double click to open them. I am used to getting the delimiter dialogue, making ...

Re: Your first connection....

Funny how the memory fades... I remember $0.25/min long distance to dial into a BBS and IIRC, Compuserv was something like $20 / hour to connect to the internet. IIRC, I had a blazing fast 1200 Baud Modem -- just past the 300 baud days. Due to cost, most everything I did on the internet was kind of ...

Re: The "so" annoyance

As a writer, my biggest gripe is when they, or them is used to denote a singular. All I can think of is someone failed English class. Granted, I'm better at speaking redneck than English, but even I understand the difference between a singular and a group, and for us saying "guys" is mean...

Re: Is it crazy to consider using QEMU/KVM in Mint to run a FreeBSD Apache Server

VM is a great idea, especially for a BSD given the hardware constraints. If the machine will only be running VM's, why not a bare metal Hypervisor like Proxmox or ESXI? The performance will be far better. I think you are likely right about that. Learning more, think that is a wise route and hoping ...

Is it crazy to consider using QEMU/KVM in Mint to run a FreeBSD Apache Server

I have been running an Apache web server (no sql or php) on a Mac for many years. I need to update that to something current. Having had such success with a BSD based system for so long I am kind of partial to BSD. I am also leaning towards moving everything to Virtual machines for two reasons. 1. I...

YES! Seems to me like too many people are looking for offense wherever they can and become offended regardless of intent.

Re: What do you do when you boot up?

My daily driver is a laptop. I use suspend. Typically only restart with a kernel update. I too open htop on start, along with battop and a 3rd terminal window that I may or may not run neofetch. The 3rd terminal window is just open for when I want to actually run a terminal command. These 3 terminal...

Re: The "so" annoyance

So, for the so annoyance, apparently you can blame Microsoft or Chaucer :D Apparently it has been used as a coordinating conjunctive opening word in a sentence since Chaucer in the mid 1300s! The recent popularity supposedly started in Silicon Valley with Microsoft employees. This is according to Wi...

Re: The "so" annoyance

My English skills are lacking -- I am a native speaker. I am very impressed with the ability of so many people on this who aren't native speakers to use the language clearly and effectively. Was my use of so in the last sentence wrong? I truly do not understand the rules very well.

Re: New to Linux, trying to understand the playing field

One thing I've done with "really useful" commands is to repeat them but prepending with # so they are easier to find in ~/.bash_history , but mainly I copy-paste terminal output and save as logs of important stuff for easy later reference. That also lets me see what order the commands wer...

Re: Why so complicated

I find PotterR9934's "rant" absolutely justified I'd say that they expressed themselves in a civil manner and I find angrier the reactions than the original post. In fact package management is more complicated today than it was 10 years ago Its state is at least confusing to newcomers. Ca...

Re: Why so complicated

I too would like to know what programs were so difficult. I did have to do some kind of complicated things to get QEMU/KVM up and running but that was my choice. I could have just used Virtual Box from the software manager and it would be as easy and likely easier than doing it in Windows. The last ...

Re: Ubuntu install

One difference is that Clem and his team isn't trying to turn into Microsoft as Canonical has shown signs it does want to ( Forcing snaps is one example) That is why I was confused. Yes..both distros have access to the same PPAs and same base, and 99.99% of all apt whatever commands work for both.....
