Re: 2 glitchs: Rendering Chromium, and MDM doesn't work
Here's a "lightbulb" moment. Ever since Ubuntu Maverick, I've been using the following to fix nvidia-related problems with plymouth, and it finally occurred to me that Mint is an Ubuntu-based distro: - Install the "v86d" and "hwinfo" packages - Use the "hwinfo --fr...

You might try installing and playing with Infinality, which many people swear makes for better-looking font rendering.

Re: 2 glitchs: Rendering Chromium, and MDM doesn't work
The problem with MDM is due to my old NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS card (using the proprietary driver), which doesn't seem to handle the tradeoff from a framebuffer to X very well. If I take out the "vga=791" line, I get "Linux Mint 15" displayed in an ugly VGA console font, but MDM in...

2 glitchs: Rendering Chromium, and MDM doesn't work
I'm having two problems with Mint 15, 64-bit Cinnamon edition, updated to current. First, MDM starts OK, it displays the mouse cursor (it even turns into an I-beam in the correct places), but I can't enter my user name (or even select it). Pressing the Enter key does nothing. Going to a command line...

Re: Chrome and Audacity break Sound
Whew. Sorry I couldn't help fix your issue. What I'm seeing is that, every time I reboot and log in to Cinnamon, I have to choose the correct sound output device; it's defaulting to "Built-In Audio Analog Stereo" rather than my sound card. The setting does not "stick" between reb...

Re: Chrome and Audacity break Sound
I'm sorry, I didn't mean for you to create a file with the same information as I have in mine. I was just posting mine as an example.
Please run the command "cat /proc/asound/modules" and post the results.

Re: Mint 14 not remembering settings
The fix to the incessant Firefox multiple tab reminder problem can be found in this thread . Short version: Go to about:config and make sure the values for "browser.tabs.warnOnClose" and "browser.warnOnQuit" are both set to "false". I have not observed the behavior from...

Re: Chrome and Audacity break Sound
Here's something else to try. You may have two sound-related kernel modules being loaded, and the wrong one being loaded first and used for sound output instead of the one you want. Find out which modules are loaded with the command $ cat /proc/asound/modules 0 snd_hda_intel 1 snd_ice1724 That's the...

Re: Unable to mount Floppy Disk
Further info at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udisks2/+bug/1054414 particularly #42/43. The issue may be fixed when the updates filter down Thanks for that. I got the error message the OP mentions after installing Nadia 14 MATE, and I do have a real floppy installed on my physical syste...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments
Here's my two cents, FWIW. I am not a fan of Unity or GNOME shell. (If you are, great. I'm not, and I'm not going to use either of them, full stop.) I thought that, when Ubuntu 12.04 was released, I'd be switching to Xfce, or maybe Cinnamon, as my main desktop environment. Then, lo and behold, Ubunt...

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but most of Cinnamon appears to be coded in Javascript, as is MGSE -- meaning, the menu is pretty slow. (Which is also my main gripe with the menu in MGSE.) Do you have any plans to speed it up by using something other than a scripting language? (One would assume that...

Re: Unusually long pause while booting
...and the solution: This motherboard has two built-in LAN ports. I wasn't using eth0 but it was still enabled in the BIOS. Disabling it ended the minute-and-a-half pause. (Haven't seen this problem with any other version of Linux I've put on this box.)

Unusually long pause while booting
The system stops for approximately a minute while it's booting. The kernel timing mark goes from [ 9.996093] intel8x0_measure_ac97_clock: measured 53355 usecs (2624 samples) [ 10.005832] intel8x0: clocking to 46848 (which would have to do with an ALSA driver); then there's nothing for about a minute...

Re: Problem with boot after installing Nvidia driver
Your system's probably using a framebuffer with the nouveau driver when it boots, which you can disable with "nomodeset" in GRUB. And you probably need to create your own /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to load the nvidia driver (or use NVIDIA's "nvidia-xconfig" utility to do it). If tha...

Re: Problem with boot after installing Nvidia driver
When you boot up, and GRUB2 comes up, try halting the countdown timer, highlighting the entry that boots into LMDE, and pressing "e" to edit it. On the line that looks something like this: linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-686 root=UUID=d2393747-fa69-4cf2-b0e8-4d1cfe831dc9 ro quiet splash ...ch...

Re: LMDE Bug Reports Thread
I wanted the hp-toolbox and installed hplip packages (including hplip-gui). However I can't find any hp-toolbox anywhere in the menus. Finally I started hp-toolbox from a terminal window. Nevertheless I haven't been able to install my network-connected HP Photosmart 2610 all-in-one printer. When I ...

Re: LMDE Bug Reports Thread
I have 3 PATA drives in this box and was going to put LMDE on sdc3 (/) and sdc4 (/home). Installer bug 1: When it asked which drive I wanted to install to, it only listed the drives by their sizes - e.g. ( ) 169 ( ) 80 ( ) 160 Bug 2: It didn't ask me if or where I wanted to mount the partitions on s...
