that seems completely spastic! I would have thought /etc/rcS.d/ is single user mode same as /etc/rc1.d/ the only thing started in there should be the keyboard/mouse. so the /etc/rcS.d/ is a start up area. it is run for every runlevel even single user. this is crap! look in /etc/events.d/rc-d...

KDE is my favorite. GNOME, I find, is too limiting and simple. And I HATE gconf. A lot.

/dev/scd0 is now /dev/hda (primary master drive) /dev/scd1 is now /dev/hdc (secondary master drive) Yes this is a known problem. One finds on the Web much of anybody complaining about that, each update of the kernel 2.6.20 changing the disk identification. See for example http://www.thejemre...

That's the problem. It's already set not to start with boot, but yet when I boot up my computer, it always says "configuring network interfaces" and stays there forever until it fails to connect. This is one of the reasons I've always liked Gentoo. The init system wasn't such a pain, it had a comman...

@linuxviolin: Nope. Envy has messed up other people's systems, too. It was a fresh install, so it couldn't have been any modifications I made to the system. Installing the driver through synaptic is guaranteed to work, whereas scripts can fail. And using that nvidia-xconfig command, beryl, compiz or...

Hey, here comes a Linux nerd to the rescue. I'll provide you with a sure-fire step-by-step way of getting your brick operational again. But, it involves the command line. Grab your Mint Linux CD and put it in your drive. Boot from it. Log into it. Now, do you know where you installed Mint? In Konque...

oops. You have to use sudo for all apt-get commands. Check my above post, I've fixed it. (hit reload a few times to see it)

jb14813 why you don't use Envy for installing nvidia drivers? NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NO. The last time I used that tool, it destroyed my entire system. Don't use it. just install the nvidia driver and use nvidia-xconfig. It does the same thing as far as I can tell, and it won't...

It happened to me at times if I was using a composite desktop in Gentoo (compiz, beryl, compiz-fusion) so that might be your problem as well.

your sources.lst must be broken. Either that, or you need some new glasses. Too bad I don't know how to fix a broken sources.lst file. see if you can use apt-get to install them. sudo apt-get install gsm-utils gstreamer0.8-gsm libgsm1 libgsm1-dev EDIT: oops, forgot sudo. This command won't work with...

You know what? GUIs suck. Open the program called Konsole in the menu. copy and paste following things in order (in Konsole paste is shift+insert): sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new synaptic sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --allow-ddcci --allow-glx-with-composite --c...

You should use adept and search for these things. I typed in GSM and some things stood out to me.

Try installing gsm-utils, gstreamer0.8-gsm libgsm1 and libgsm1-dev.

alright. let me actually get the list of packages up, and I'll guide you step-by-step on how to do this using Adept. 1. Click the menu and click Add and Remove Programs to start Adept. 2. search for nvidia 3. install nvidia-glx-new. 4. run this command: sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --a...

No, you should never have to open .tar files. Are you using the KDE edition? Click the menu and click "add and remove programs". Then, search for "nvidia" and install nvidia-new. Don't go to the nvidia website to download software. Only use either Synaptic or Adept to add and remove software. Using ...

Synaptic hard to use? What's so hard about clicking search, typing some terms (or a program name), clicking go and choosing your desired program out of the list?

Of course, there's always Adept. But I only use that for the notifier - I highly prefer synaptic. Maybe you'll like Adept.
