Re: Buying new laptop, looking for advice

I was wondering about the chip, whether I should go for the i7 or if the i5 will be enough ... I mostly use the browser, watch videos (and very occasionally want to edit one) and a bit of admin/paperwork. Put it to you this way - my work-provided laptop is a Dell Latitude E7440, with an Intel i7-46...

Re: Buying new laptop, looking for advice

Thank you to everybody for your advice. I'd made a deliberate decision that I wanted to buy a machine that came with Linux, even though I know they can be a bit more expensive, because I want to support the companies that provide Linux machines (quite apart from the advantages of knowing that the sy...

Buying new laptop, looking for advice

Hi - I currently run Mint 19 Cinnamon on a desktop I had made to order back in 2010, and it's still running fine, but I'm finding the lack of mobility to be a problem, and am looking for new laptop, with the aim of futureproofing it. I'd rather pay more for a system that will last, rather than have ...

Re: Who no longer uses Windows?

Very occasionally I help my brother out with his Windows 7 laptop, but I haven't used Windows at home since 2010 or at work since 2011 - my current employer actually uses Red Hat, and knowing Linux has sometimes been useful, even though I don't work in a technical field. When my Dad's Vista PC went ...

Re: Unlocking the keyring for Chrome etc

Thank you very much for trying to help. Having to unlock the keyring goes back to when your wireless password used to be stored in it as well, and so you couldn't just say, oh, I won't store anything in it. You make a good point that it's probably not necessary to worry about it now. I don't keep br...

Unlocking the keyring for Chrome etc (Solved)

Up until now I've always used this method of creating a script that unlocks the keyring when I log in http://positon.org/gnome-autologin-and-unlocking-the-keyring-with-a-password but with Mint 19 Cinnamon it no longer works. Is there a way I can edit it to do so, or will I need to work with a blank ...

Re: stubborn linux users on facebook groups

As a Facebook admin we found setting posts to be pre-approved did a massive amount to control the drama on the group. If a post is against the rules, just delete it, it never appears on the group - if you're feeling helpful, PM people to tell them why their post didn't get through. Combine that with...

Re: Why upgrade instead of clean install?

Because it involves setting up your whole system again - downloading software, tweaking settings etc. Whereas upgrading in place you just get a shiny new operating system without the faff. Obviously it's something that needs to be planned for in the system, and I've done plenty of clean installs sin...

Re: Broken SSD

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. For some reason I didn't get the notification that somebody had replied. Just as a couple of clarifications, there's nothing on the drive that isn't in at least 2 other places, so I'm not worried about getting the data back, just somebody else reading it. In th...

Broken SSD

A couple of months ago, I bought an SSD to replace the hard drive in my ageing netbook, and to start with I was really pleased with it. Recently, though, it's decided to stop working altogether - it claims that the cable is unplugged. The old drive still works in that machine, and the SSD doesn't wo...

Re: Are you already using Mint 18?

I still have 17.3 on this PC, but I haven't booted into it for a month or more - 18 is working great for me.

Software was the main reason I wanted to upgrade as soon as possible - the latest version of Corebird is great for Twitter on the desktop.

For now I'll happily carry on using my perfectly stable Mint 18 beta.

Re: Upgrade or Start Again, a dilemma...

But exists more important option than first 3. Is there any reason for LM 18? What's the rush? Corebird... Well, obviously it's not the only reason, but a good, working Twitter client, now that they've messed up the webpage version? That's definitely a good reason to upgrade for me. Honestly, I'm j...

Upgrade or Start Again, a dilemma...

The beta version of Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon is working absolutely fine in the test partition on my desktop, and I've managed to get it to look and work pretty much exactly the way I want it. So now the question is, do I upgrade the Mint 17 partition when the option becomes available, and carry on wit...

Re: Terminal for GTK based versions

Thank you for the explanation about the x-apps - and why there's no necessity for a terminal version. :-) It's also true that it's perfectly easy to install another terminal (as I say, I already do). It just strikes me that at a time when various distros such as Netrunner and Ubuntu Mate come with a...

Terminal for GTK based versions

I want to suggest that all the GTK versions of Mint 18 - Cinnamon, Mate and Xfce - should use the Xfce4 terminal, or if an x-app version is being created that it includes the drop-down terminal window function that is included in xfce4-terminal by default. It works perfectly well on Cinnamon and Mat...

Re: Dropbox icon acts as System Tray (Solved)

Ciryon - the problem may be the command used to start Dropbox when you open the session. What works for me is to turn off the setting in Dropbox that starts it automatically, and then create your own startup entry. It's been a while since I've used XFCE, but I assume there's an entry for the Startup...

Software choices

I'm a devoted Cinnamon user, but every time I install it, one of the first things I do is to install the xfce terminal. This may well be an ignorant question, but does the gnome terminal have any feature that is more useful than the drop-down mode you can get with xfce? Yes, you can run something li...
