Re: ALL OF A SUDDEN! I'm getting major system window issus.

So, you create a new user and no problems with the new user AND now you have 2 problems? Your math eludes me. Logout of the GUI Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and login as yourself ('broken' user) mv ~/.config ~/.config.org mv ~/.gconf ~/.gconf.org exit Ctrl+Alt+F7 and login as the 'broken' user. NOTE: You will...

Panel GONE! Can't find it!?!?

After a new addition of Cinnamon to a Mate Mint 13 install, I wanted to move the default panel to the top. Click on the panel settings, and change - and voila - I have no panel, and I can not get it back. Oooopsie. So, where are the panel settings stored? They do not seem to be in ~/.config, I can't...

Re: ALL OF A SUDDEN! I'm getting major system window issus.

Further update; Xfce is still working. After reinstalling SpiderOak, I don't get a repeat of the issues. The spideroak installation appears to have been a red herring. Idk confused happened, but something borked two things - the xfce desktop settings, and whatever is causing the program crashes. I s...

Re: Linux, Samba and windows file sharing..

I have backed up the data on my shared drives to an external drive. So if anyone is willing to help, I will be happy to wipe EVERYTHING clean and start fresh. TO get started, I'd need: Recommended Linux flavor/desktop. (I do NOT like KDE as it seems to run much slower than Mate or Cinnamon). Tips o...

Re: Linux, Samba and windows file sharing..

This is more of a vent so I apologize in advance if it comes off whiny. I have scoured the web looking for reasons why I cannot access my shared Linux drives on my Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC. There are a lot of great "How To's" but I have yet to find a simple AND yet accurate checklist for...

Re: ALL OF A SUDDEN! I'm getting major system window issus.

Update; Very interesting results. Time passes, and I, of course, logged in again. I just thought I'd give the 2nd user another go. No "internal error" - and I discovered that all the "broken" stuff in xfce was NOT broken with the 2nd user. So I'm facing 2 issues, not one. I renam...

Re: ALL OF A SUDDEN! I'm getting major system window issus.

The first thing I would "do" is create a new user on the system and login as that new user to see if the problem is in fact, system-wide or specific to your login identity (something in your ~/.config or ~/.gconf) that may be causing the issue. You may have to give it some time to make it...

Re: ALL OF A SUDDEN! I'm getting major system window issus.

Bump, please. Another possible symptom/clue - the gnome widgets are not working. They crash on desktop start on both Cinnamon and xfce. In xfce I at least get an error telling me they have crashed. On Cinammon they have died silently. I uninstalled the SpiderOak and there was no change. I just don't...

ALL OF A SUDDEN! I'm getting major system window issus.

Greets - the problem(s): in xfce, my windows lost their title bar. Can't move the windows, can't switch between window. Programs will open, but I can't get back to a program after opening a new one. In Cinnamon and xfce, I have gotten "Linux Mint has an internal failure" crashes. I can't c...

Re: Is formatting PC many times bad for the hard disk?

No, formatting the hard disk is not bad for it. In some instances, I suppose it can even be argued that it could extend the life of the hard disk, at least theoretically. Formatting is only doing a read/write action on the disk. The higher level of formatting, the more read/write action you would se...

Re: Pantheon greeter

Thank you for that helpful bit. I am super glad MATE exists and is improving, but I don't think I have a need to update it, just because. On the other hand, I am a superfan of Nautilus, and I am more than extremely glad Mint is keeping the good Nautilus alive with caja. Back in Windows, I used X2 as...

Re: yet another antivirus thread ?

Huh - an example was asked for - and I was too lazy to spend my time searching - but not 30 seconds after I posted my last reply, I ran into this: http://certstation.blogspot.com/2012/12/linux-servers-targeted-by-new-drive-by.html The danger is real, and the danger includes linux. Be educated, and s...

Re: yet another antivirus thread ?

. . .The reason for it is not that hackers don't see money in it. The reason for it the more secure rights management system of Linux. . . . If that were indeed the case, then Mac OSX would also be more secure by design. But, Mac is almost always the first to fall to the hackers. Why is this? The w...

Re: yet another antivirus thread ?

AVG and Bitdefender still show up in a search on "anti-virus" - as offering packages for the linux platform. Dr.Web runs their program rescue disk using linux as the platform. (Does that sentence make sense? Dr.Web has an emergency cd iso (live-cd) you can download and burn. It is linux, a...

Re: Installed lightdm - and now boot crashes - no recovery

Thanks, viking! Ctrl-alt-F1 worked. Yup - I thought about doing the chroot bit last night - but fortunately I don't have to do all the drive mounting and all. However, something in the lightdm install was borked - the dpkg-reconfigure did not work. So, I used dpkg-reconfigure to reset it to mdm, and...

Re: Pantheon greeter

Cool: in this case, yes the backdrop - full screen - very nice. The actual greeter/login box - has a user drop-down or pick list, not an entry box. The clock is icing on the cake - but definitely part of what I was looking at, and part of what made it worthy of "cool"! Thanks for doing the...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

hmmmm - seems I can't vote in the poll. np - I can use my big mouth to announce my pref. MATE, or xfce. Forget gnome3 and unity - those are designed by linux geeks who want linux to ONLY be used by the geek population. Elitists. It is scandalous, and disgusting to me. Canonical used to be on what I ...

Installed lightdm - now boot crashes - no recovery (Solved)

I got tired of typing my name in mdm - so I installed lightdm, no apparent problems. It asked which one I wanted to use as a default. I think, Ok, looking good, right! (right?) I said lightdm. Now, I boot, and i get errors, and mint won't boot. Won't boot in recovery, either. Startup says mdm is not...

Re: Trying to make nvidia graphx work w/ nouveau and dual mo

HTFU, eh? LOL I tried the nvidia prop drivers, including whatever the latest version was (if 3.10, then that one) in the Ubuntu install, and it was a bollocks fest. I've never before had the open source work as well as or better than the nvidia drivers. But neither one resolved the issues. I'm not e...
