Re: Getting rid of Windows XP

Maybe my wording was wrong  , what Killdisk does is write a pass of zeros on the disk.

Re: Getting rid of Windows XP

I have used a program called Killdisk to zero (low level format) various hard drives
that were affected by viruses in the mbr.Worked every time, and it's a free download that
you extract to a bootable floppy disk.

Re: Dell D610 & LinuxMint 4.0

I have a D610 dual booting Linuxmint 4.0 and Windows Vista Ultimate, had absolutely no problems installing or running them, except that Vista sometimes freezes up while booting, big surprise. The D610 runs really hot with Vista and with Mint it is really cool, the fan barely runs at all. Oh, I have ...

Re: Cannot run from disk

What are the hardware specs for the computers you used?
Mint needs quite a bit of ram to install/run decently.
I would recommend a minimum of 512 mb. ram.
Some people have had successful intalls with less, like maybe 320-384 mb,
but sometimes they run into problems.

Always, Always, make a backup copy of your existing file if you're not sure how changes will affect your system...

Re: DVD burning...file too large!

Don't know if it'll help, but for Windows you can get Nero versions with the Recode option
which will let you modify the files like taking out unwanted languages, previews, menus, etc.
to make the file smaller. Just an idea.

Re: Burn cd from live cd boot?

thanks for the input.
I just saw something on ebay, an IDE to laptop hd converter,
maybe I'll try slaving the laptop hd to my desktop and then copy the files to cd.

Burn cd from live cd boot?

Hi, a friend has a laptop with a corrupted, non booting winxp install, needs to wipe and reinstall,
but needs to retrieve data/photos from hd first...

Redesign Mint launcher on taskbar?

Hi, I was wondering about how to play with/change the Mint launch icon on the taskbar.
Any ideas how I could do this? I was thinking about "candying" it up a little, like
making it bigger or "overlaying" it on top of the taskbar? Any ideas, oh great ones?

No, I don't use beagle....
I automatically remove beagle after any install or reinstall,
as others mentioned before, it just drags down my system,
and is really not that useful for my purposes.

Any reason why you need to do an upgrade instead of just a clean, full install of Cassandra? If you have a little time it shoudn't be too difficult to just install Cassandra and add your favorite programs and applications (from mintinstall or synaptic)... and then you'd have full blown Cassan...

I too use Firefox, whether in Mint, XP, or Vista. I even took the liberty of
installing Firefox on the main computer at my workplace, and also removed access to IE . So far I've not heard any complaints at all... Firefox just does it's job well :D

if you don't need anything at all on this partition, you might be able to just
format it to ext3 or whatever file system you want by running sudo gparted or sudo qparted from terminal. just an idea.
