excellent series of Mint screencasts

Gordon Sinclair (thistleweb) has just embarked on an excellent series of screencasts based on Linux Mint 10 RC. So far, he's covered the Mint Update and Mint Backup utilities (which are also common to Mint 9). Apologies if this has already been broadcast here but I looked and couldn't see any refere...

Re: update manager gui corrupted

Oddly enough, this wasn't my problem. It fixed the problem but only temporarily.

My root cause was a problem with a locally installed copy of Python Imaging Library (PIL) so I re-installed PIL and everything works fine now.

Re: update manager gui corrupted

Hi Francis

I had similar problems with 'Update Manager' not displaying the software packages. I fixed it by removing the '~/.linuxmint/mintinstall' directory. There is also a directory for 'mintupgrade' too.

should Nautilus 'Tree' view be the default ?

I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that today, after 7 months and 21 days of using Linux Mint, I discovered that Nautilus has a useful 'Tree' view. Now I'm used to tabs in Firefox and Thunderbird 3 so using tabs and places in Nautilus wasn't really an issue for me. However, my wife has really struggl...

Re: Horrble Splash Screen

I have an Acer 5532 laptop with 15.6" HD capable of up to 1366 x 768. However, I think the Splash logo is only supplied in 1024x768. As for the administrator privileges when running 'StartUp Manager', well I always log in as a normal user (with Admin rights) and have to enter the password whenever I...

Re: Horrble Splash Screen

I had this problem on i32 and amd64 Mint 9.

I simply followed the instructions in http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/37 to resolve it.

What resolutions did you change to ? I noticed that it had to be 1024x768 (24 bit) to work for me. The higher resolution didn't work.

Re: No logo when booting Mint 9

Alternatively, you can try fixing this from Mint.

Select 'Control Centre - StartUp Manager' and try setting the resolution to 1024x768 and 'Color Depth' to 24 bits on the 'Boot Options' tab.

Mine had got somehow set to 640x480 and 16 bit after installing the nVidia drivers.

See the section named '"Package" upgrades' in Clem's excellent tutorial which also describes the pros and cons of each method.

Re: 1G ram LM9

I use LM9 primarily for the same apps as you (Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin, and OpenOffice) in a paltry 512MB on an old Dimension 4500 which works perfectly fine. [ AbiWord is an excellent lightweight, fast, smaller replacement for OO.o. ] I am thinking on splashing out on another 512MB RAM with the...

Re: Linux Mint 9 on Acer Aspire 5532

Unfortunately because I am idiot, I blew LM8 away so only have LM9 installed so can't do any comparative timings.

As I said, it's purely a gut instinct and probably wrong.

Linux Mint 9 on Acer Aspire 5532

Upgraded my wife's laptop to LM9 RC over the weekend using the 64 bit version. The minor problem (http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=44748) I had with wireless drivers (network drops, spotty signal) using Helena have disappeared and LM9 works fine out of the box including the proprieta...

Re: Microsoft True Type fonts dropped from Mint 9 ?

Another of my post installation tasks is to suppress the fortune from Terminal.

However, having seen of some Husse's words of wisdom, I simply couldn't bring myself.

A lovely touch from the Mint team and a fitting tribute to a much missed member of the community.

Microsoft True Type fonts dropped from Mint 9 ?

I installed Linux Mint 9 RC last night on my aging Dell Dimension 4500. Everything worked seamlessly OOTB and I quickly configured wireless, my Canon IP4000 printer and migrated to Thunderbird 3. It is so stable, responsive and robust, I will probably upgrade my wife's Acer Aspire laptop tonight. On...

Re: success with Mint 8 on Acer Aspire 5532

Remoulder Many thanks for the pointer to the tip about installing the various backport modules. This increased the signal strength 3 fold and eliminated all packet loss. As this laptop is almost exclusively used for Internet access, this has made my day. My wife is also delighted. Anyone else with a...
