Re: Unoffical Mint OS X !!!

Try Macbuntu. Seriously, install Ubuntu 10.04, install Macbuntu on top - http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Macbuntu?content=129021 I don't use ubuntu so I got rid of it after I tried it, but I have to say it is unbelieveably good, particularly if you only use gtk apps, cos then the global menu ...

Re: Fedora Edition?

+1 from me too. With squeeze currently being pretty damned stable I see LMDE as "the stable mint", so again I don't really see that a centos base would add much value. If another release of LMDE in 12 months or so arrived with sources.list targeting squeeze or stable rather than testing it really wo...

Re: Fedora Edition?

Speaking as an ex-Fedora user I don't see any value in a Mint Fedora edition. There are distinct advantages to using LMDE over the standard Mint editions so that version made sense (I am using it now - it's become my most-used distro on my laptop), but using Fed/CentOS? I really don't see any value ...

Re: Can't remove/ purge Firefox

I will add to the bug report in a min, but just for reference I thought i'd post the following here. I used aptitude rather than apt-get and got the following - peony spoovy # aptitude purge firefox The following packages will be REMOVED: firefox{p} 0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remov...

Can't remove/ purge Firefox

If I apt-get purge (or remove) Firefox, it purges firefox and installs Iceweasel. And vice versa. - spoovy@peony ~ $ sudo apt-get remove firefox Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following extra packages will be installed: iceweasel Suggeste...

mintnoob wrote:I voted Short release cycle since manually updating apps is easier than doing fresh installs all the time.

Question though, what would Mint have to do to become a rolling release, ditch Ubuntu and be based off an RR distro?

Base it off Debian rather than Ubuntu.

Re: Debian as Base

Aha I see :). I think I would stop using Mint too if I started experiencing a lot of bugs, but I honestly haven't found many yet. I use the XFCE community version tho which is maybe something to do with it? Are a lot of the bugs related to GNOME maybe? You have probably tried it already but just in ...

but i do love Mint, I was hear sense day one, but i do believe thing could be better and not mediocre. but at the end I do not care as long it is based on Ubuntu I refuse to use it for mental sanity  Don't really mean to intrude on a private squabble but this is a pretty weird thing to say fr...

Re: Debian as Base

Anyone, and I mean any Windows fresh noob, can install debian or Arch. You might get hung up once or twice and may even have to run the installer two or three times before you finally get it, but the reward is well worth the effort. Blimey, you know some very different type of people to me. Most wi...

Re: Aptitude & Synaptic

The more I have read into this subject the muddier it gets, so I'm just going to continue to use aptitude and synaptic together.

If it breaks my installation so be it, at least then i'll know :D . If it does break i'll also post any info I can here as well.

Re: What are you most dissatisfied with in Linux Mint?

It's potentially very different, if you want it to be, and Debian has a very different philosophy as well if that's important to you. Debian has three strands at different points of the stability-cutting edge scale, any of which can be used as effectively a rolling release base (stable, testing and ...

Re: What are you most dissatisfied with in Linux Mint?

Rolling release is my only problem (and I had to search for that one);) -Hinto +1. Not that it is a big deal by any means. I would also like to see it based on Debian, partly for this reason but for stability and versatility too. And I'm a tiny bit uneasy about the direction Ubuntu is going in with...

Re: Aptitude & Synaptic

Oh no, not another one!! I eventually settled on aptitude a while back after listening to lots of advice/opinions on the debian forums and elsewhere. I was led to believe that aptitude is now the official package manager recommeded by debian, as it is functionally superior to apt-get. I've no ...

Aptitude & Synaptic

I have been away from Mint for a long while, but after giving Mint 8 XFCE a go I am so impressed, it will deffo be hanging around on my laptop :), so I have a question: I am used to using CLI package managers, aptitude being my deb handler of choice, so I have been using aptitude on my new mint inst...

Re: Flash problem - no picture

Again not really 'solved' but here is the product of my searching - Its a problem with ITV player which it seems ITV have acknowledged. It appears that lots of (all?) linux users have had this problem, and I couldn't find a solution. There is however a workaround. Go to www.STV.tv which is the Scott...

OK so this post is just for anyone else's reference who's having the same problem. I have switched to Ubuntu 9.04 yet was having the same problem. Re: Walkman NWZ-S515 - JSymphonic probs

OK its not solved exactly but its a workaround of sorts, so I thought i'd post this anyway for other's interest. I started using ubuntu instead of linuxmint a couple of days ago for various reasons, mainly due to various niggles with mint and levels of help and support that were not what i had hoped...

I have turned off all compiz effects and gnome compositing in mintDesktop though, so at least nothing crashing at the moment. I checked in a terminal as you suggested, all those lines...
