Re: Cinnamon screensaver not respecting delay setting

The strange thing is that I have it already set at 30 minutes in the screensaver settings. That setting seem to only affect the display turning completely off. However, the time over dark background screensaver can't seem to be controlled from there. EDIT: The problem was that I was changing the inc...

[SOLVED] Cinnamon screensaver not respecting delay setting

After about 5 minutes of idleness, Cinnamon screensaver will activate that dark screen with the clock on the lower left, regardless of the time setting I use in the Power section. I even checked the settings in dconf-editor to make sure they're changing correctly. Is anyone facing a similar issue? I...

Re: Permanently Change Cinnamon Mouse Cursor Themes

gedit /usr/share/icons/default Then edit index.theme. Change "Inherits=DMZ-White" to name of folder you want used. Use complete address like: [Inherits=/usr/share/themes/name of file] if you leave the icon theme in that folder. then Save. Log out and in to get results. This worked for me. I didn't ...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Let me explain some of the reasons why, in my opinion, Gnome Shell is a step backwards in efficiency, usability and ergonomics: ... QFT. Seriously, this is the most succinct explanation of what's wrong with Gnome Shell and why we need Mate/Cinnamon I've ever come across. Everything you said is 100%...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

I just want to say, reading this thread has been both enlightening and enjoyable. There are some great posts in here that really expose the DEs at hand for their true abilities and weaknesses, and their use cases. This could be the best modern DE debate on the net so far. Admittedly, in the end it p...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Cinnamon has done away with Gnome Shell's unified overview but still has window and workspace overviews. I like the unified overview but have come to think splitting them into separate entities works somewhat better (matter of taste and preference of course). I really hope someone with coding skill...

Re: [Solved] Are hibernate/suspend problems solved in Mint 1

Remwen, that is strange, I think we have the same laptop components. My card too is recognised as 1150 in Windows and 200M in Linux. However I'm inclined to believe it's 200M seeing how crappy its performance is even on the lower end games. My other specs are: 1.5GB RAM, 1.6 GHz Turions 64 x2 TL-50,...

Re: Are hibernate/suspend problems solved in Mint 10?

I'm happy to report that both hibernate and suspend are working correctly on my Inspiron 1501 with Linux Mint 10 (i.e. Ubuntu 10.10). So here's my brief history with hibernate/suspend on Linux:

Code: Select all

Version | Works?
  LM7 yes
  LM9 no
  LM10 yes

Re: ATI Xpress 1150, need proprietary driver but uh..

Well you can try Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) or Mint 5 (Elyssa), they are supported until April 2011 and have the X server version you need.

I'm not sure about downgrading the X server on a newer release, it might screw up your entire installation since many things depend on it. Good luck.

[Solved] Are hibernate/suspend problems solved in Mint 10?

I have hibernate and suspend issues in Mint 9, and am aware of a few others that do. I'm just wondering whether anyone with previous issues in hibernate or suspend tried out Mint 10 and it solved their problem. EDIT: I have been using Linux Mint 10 for about a week now and hibernate/suspend are work...

Re: ATI Xpress 1150, need proprietary driver but uh..

Because in unbuntu 9 they upgraded it, and the last version that works is ubuntu 8, which linux mint 6 is based off of? If my searching was correct? You're correct. Here's a passage from this wiki : Which cards do ATI no longer support? The ATI Radeon 9500-9800, Xpress200-1250, 690G, 740G, X300-X25...

Re: Speedstep... AAAGH!

Can you get XP to display the correct frequency? If not, then it probably isn't a Mint related issue. The slow performance/high CPU usage you're experiencing may be related to other things. But I agree that trying another distro, maybe even another Mint version will clear up the situation. Good luck.

Re: What are you most dissatisfied with in Linux Mint?

Of course you should switch to Linux if you want eyecandy! Windows' Aero and Mac OS X's Aqua simply pales in comparison to Compiz. :D As for not being able to use Micro SD cards, well, that's a hardware recognition problem, and not directly attributable to Mint. Yeah, hardware, especially more obsc...

Re: Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.04) Unstable, Freezes

Well hibernate is still causing problems, even after I increased my swap partition to 2.5 times my RAM. I suspect it might be the open source ATI driver that came with Isadora, since I often get very fuzzy display after the hibernation wake up, and the driver in Gloria was an older version. But I gu...

Re: Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.04) Unstable, Freezes

Ok I have never used hibernate or suspend in the past 40 days, and never had any crashes or freezes, which goes to confirm my initial suspicions that they were the cause in the first place. Now I'm going to start hibernating and suspending again with the hope that the updates that were installed dur...

Re: Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.04) Unstable, Freezes

Oh please stop blaming hardware. Most of the users having freezing problems with Mint 9 had none in previous versions. How you think this does not directly imply a software bug is beyond me. I'm fine with running Linux with a few bugs here and there, I understand it doesn't have the resources that b...

Re: What are you most dissatisfied with in Linux Mint?

That's one of the most annoying things about Linux (or just Ubuntu). With every new release, a lot of things are fixed or improved, and a lot of things are screwed up. Why can't they just skip the screwing up part!

Ok I found what you were looking for. You can download OpenStreetMap map files here: http://downloads.cloudmade.com/ Then you can use them with Navit: http://www.navit-project.org/ It's an open source navigation system. Download the *.bin.zip file from cloudmade and use it with it. Also, you can exp...
