Re: Unfortunate number of difficulties 17.3 Rosa

You've probably not been around Mint long enough to understand the background of MATE and Cinnamon. About 10 years ago, a version of the Gnome desktop was in it's heyday, Gnome 2.x. Ubuntu used it, Mint used it, many other distros used it. It was well tested not just by Mint, but by LOTS of differen...

Re: May have issues with receiving email from here

My suspicion is a spam filter, probably one from your internet and/or e-mail provider. If there is some way the severity of the filter can be turned down, that would help. The replies look like the personal e-mails that they are. Official Mint e-mails look, well, official, and a lot of spam tries to...

Re: Lifelock Alert - Linux mint ID stolen!

I don't remember getting a warning e-mail myself, but my home page is Mint's version of the Google search engine, so the newest stuff in the Linux Mint Blog is right there, and that's how I got the news. Some e-mail spam filters are pretty severe, and can filter out things you actually want, especia...

Re: Why I'm sticking with Linux Mint

Completely agree with both top posters. I've tried a few other distributions (sometimes just to see if they've caught up with Linux Mint) but there is always something "off" in them. I know I could get used to some other distribution if I had to but I'm lazy and at an age where I just want to use a...

Re: Does Mint getting hacked change security thoughts?

I think it has changed security thoughts. Clearly, from statements on the Linux Mint Blog, Clem Lefebvre and team are thinking a LOT about security, and the visible changes are only the tip of the iceberg. They have been working with security pros to beef things up. I admit, security has probably be...

Re: VLC player very erratic

You might try switching the video driver, especially if using Nouveau. I often try to run the Nouveau for a while on my computers with nVidia graphics after an installation, but usually something to do with videos causes them to crash.... could it be that somehow with your computer, it's not working...

Re: Cinnamon just crashed. You are currently running in Fall

That happened to me a while back on another computer with nVidia graphics. I can't remember exactly how it got fixed... I THINK I was able to do updates, although I had to hunt for it since fallback is laid out differently, and an update took care of it. (maybe if you look through my old posts!) Or ...

Re: When to upgrade to a newer version of mint

Billzebub, I usually do the upgrade, but I have spare computers. I'd weigh the factors: 1. Your computer works well with 17.2 "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" 2. Read the list of additions in 17.3... is there a feature that is a must have for you? 3. Is your computer fairly basic, or does it have ...

Re: When to upgrade to a newer version of mint

Greygeek,

Since 17.1, there are NO non-LTS releases.... everything is based on the last Ubuntu LTS version.
17.1, 17.2, and 17.3 are all based on the same Ubuntu LTS version.

Re: Yet Another Excellent Mint 17.3 Xfce Review

I'm really glad to see the new review... thanks for posting it. The problem with the previous review was the failure of Samba. It wasn't JUST Linux Mint 17.3... it was other Ubuntu based distros as well, and the reviewer (Igor is his name, I think) was heartily sick that no one had caught it, and I ...

Re: Cutting out the middleman

Yes, the appearance, the look and feel is deceptively similar. However, if you get into problems, the answers might be quite different and possibly above some users' heads. Recent Mint versions deal with nVidia drivers pretty painlessly. In the old days, I sometimes had to use Terminal, using a comm...

Re: Why Linux Mint seems more User-Friendly than Ubuntu?

That's more than just coincidence- a couple of years back, Clem decided to spin off the Mint Debian Xfce and KDE versions. SolydX and SolydK are the result.
So, that developer was, I think, very aware of Clem's leadership style, and how crucial it is to the success of Mint.

Re: Why Linux Mint seems more User-Friendly than Ubuntu?

a lead developer that is so interactive with users? And actually listens to them? I can agree to this sentence. :) Ubuntu has got a BDFL - benevolent dictator for lifetime (stress being on the term "dictator") - and Ubuntu develops in the way the BDFL wants. Linux Mint has got a development team wh...

Re: Rebecca freezen after play video

It sounds to me like after 20 minutes of video, your memory resources are all taken up, and the system no longer has enough to run on, causing the freeze. Do you have any other web pages open when you run the video? This kind of thing would happen to me if I had too many web pages open, usually news...

Re: Name your 3 favourite open source applications

VLC - The first open source application i used, it taught me how awesome FOSS is. Firefox - A grand browser with many forks. Virtualbox - Yep. With me, it was Firefox and Audacity that showed me that open source software could be VERY good.... maybe even better than proprietary... like Internet Exp...

Re: Why Linux Mint seems more User-Friendly than Ubuntu?

Both Ubuntu & Mint are great Distros -- Mint just goes the extra mile :) I agree. And I think the core reason for that is that Clem Lefebvre goes the extra mile when it comes to listening to users. Look at all the Mint blog announcements.... people are asking questions, pointing out bugs, and Clem ...

Re: Where would we be without Ubuntu

That aggressive marketing may be worth SOMETHING. I'm also a former Windows user (XP). One day I got together with a fellow musician to jam. While we were taking a break, he showed me the Ubuntu installation on his desktop computer. And I thought... if a musician who's not much of a computer geek is...

They may be the same as far as being extremely positive reviews, but one is from ArsTechnica, and the other from TheRegister.
So they aren't the same review.
