Google Earth 6 - Text appears as... just boxes

This is in Newbie Questions, because I'm not actually sure where else to put it (maybe I'm just tired :D) Yeah, all text in Google Earth 6 renders as boxes - kinda like asian languages when you don't have a font for it. I dunno what toolkit it uses, but it sure doesn't look like GTK, it doesn't even...

Gnome 3?

Anyone here using Gnome 3? (On Mint, Ubuntu Fedora etc.) I've been using Fedora 15 for a little while now, Gnome 3 has some very nice things, such as modal dialogs and how it changes certain things depending on the hardware, such as sound adjustment. However, I still don't like Shell. Some people mi...

Respin the LMDE ISO.

I'm not sure who maintains LMDE, but they need to update the ISO. Installing LMDE and then 800MB of updates is not nice. It's been 8 months now.

Re: Newbie Work Around to Make Linux MInt 11 Read text to sp

Rather than do all that, wouldn't it be easier to just use espeak? In fact, I think it's even included in Mint by default.
(If not, just paste in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install espeak)

Then type in the terminal:
espeak "Your text goes here, in quotations."

Re: Can't clean up residual packages?

Open up a terminal and paste this in: sudo aptitude purge ~c sudo to use root priveleges, aptitude to point to the program that is being used (in this case the packager, aptitude), purge ~c to tell that program what to do. Also, you might find it useful to have an alias for cleaning things up. Just ...

Re: Adobe Flash Player Plug In: Not Installed

That's a bit weird. Maybe purge it in synaptic(search it up in Synaptic, then click the box and click completely remove), then go to Adobe's site and download the right version again. See what happens.

Point Totem (and nautilus) to custom MIDI soundfont?

Hi all, just a quick question here - How can I have MIDIs play with my own soundfont, as opposed to the default one that is used to play MIDIs? I have restricted-extras, and fluidsynth, and I even replaced the .sf2 in /usr/share/sounds/sf2 with my custom one, yet whenever I mouseover a midi in nauti...

Re: Anyone going to see today's Lunar eclipse?

I live in Australia, so it was yesterday evening for me. About 25 hours before I post this, actually. Unfortunately I didn't see it; I was too busy watching State of Origin with my firends. (NSW won for the first time in 6 years, 3 games each year, by 18 points to QLD's 8 points. It's weird because ...

Accidentally formatted my main partition

I'm not certain if this is the right board for this, so please move this if it isn't. I have a 500GB hard drive: about 200GB Win 7, 200GB Mint 10(main), 100GB Ubuntu 10.10 Anyway, I was taking openSUSE 11.4 for a spin. I decided it was good enough for an install, so I went through the installer and ...

Boot from CD (Gigabyte ga-8vm800pmd)

Yo, I have this desktop computer, when I try to boot from a Linux Mint CD, it just hangs at the plymouth splash and does nothing.

It's time to stop lurking

I've been around here for a fair while now. I only have a few posts, and half the time I'm here I don't sign in. I think it's time to stop lurking and finally introduce myself. I'm Tal and I've been enlightened for about 4 years now. My first distro was PClinuxOS, and after a year I moved through Ma...

Re: Will Mint 11 follow the Ubuntu way?

I believe I remember reading that Wayland is not planned for 11.04. It is a future change. Indeed, a way in the future change. To quote Mark himself: I’m sure we could deliver *something* in six months, but I think a year is more realistic for the first images that will be widely useful in our comm...

Re: Open Office removal...

I would say to use Synaptic to remove libreoffice, and then install openoffice.org. Or if you like to do things manually: apt search "libreoffice" and find the libreoffice equivalent to "openoffice.org", then sudo apt purge *package* && apt clean; apt autoremove Mintmenu's uninstall isn't a complete...

Re: Will Mint 11 follow the Ubuntu way?

First of all, I have only read the first page of this thread, because I don't have enough time today to read it all, so what I say may have already been said. I think we can all agree that the Unity we saw in 10.10 was awful. However as far as I know, plans are to switch to compiz. Unity is made sp...

Enabling Compiz

Hi, I just installed LMDE! Problem is I can't get compiz going. compiz --replace generates this: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0 compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found...

Re: Help me choose a laptop please!

Personally, I'm an HP man. I find HP to be very Linux friendly, and you will find an HP with good specs for about the same price range. The Toshiba has Broadcom wireless which is known not to play nice with Linux. You usually must use ndiswrapper to install the Windows wireless driver. HP has been ...

Which laptop should I buy? (Dells vs Toshibas)

UPDATE - FOUND A TOSHIBA C650D See specs at bottom Hey, Mint users! I'm buying a laptop soon, but I can only afford about $650. I have 4 laptops in mind right now - A Dell Inspiron 15 , a Toshiba Satellite L650-BT2N23 , a Dell Inspiron M101z , and a Toshiba Satellite C650D-BT2N13 . I like the Dell ...
