Re: Terminology Oldsters vs Youngsters

I remember 8 inch floppies.
At work we had to convert our 5.25 inch floppies to 3.5 inch floppies. Now no one uses floppy disks any more.

I use Windows only to stream content to an Optoma projector for watching sports and Netflix shows on a wall.

Re: Why do you choose linux mint as your main OS?

I needed an OS for a newly built computer in late 2006. I got a free CD from Ubuntu, but when I tried to install it, the thing would just spin at a high rate and not install. I knew that the computer was working because I could run Knoppix on it. I looked around and saw a new distro, Linux Mint (Bar...

Best Buy usually has some good Black Friday technology deals. They even sell some Amazon smart home packages.

Move to Compost Pile would be a more enviornmentally friendly action. :)

Re: I hate Texas right now

It's not quite as hot here in Tampa Bay area (presently 92 at 2 pm), but despite some sporatic rain we are way below normal rainfall this summer. Being 2 miles from the gulf helps keep the temperature down around here.

Re: Could AI replace Moderators

That begs the question, "could AI create a Linux distribution?" So I asked the AI at Scalenut.com: "Yes, AI has the potential to create a Linux distribution. Artificial intelligence can be used to automate various tasks involved in creating and maintaining a Linux distribution, such a...

Re: Chocolate sprinkles in the USA (or: how to become a beloved national benefactor)

 I find Hershey's dark chocolate to be too sweet for my taste. Besides having more sweetener in it, the ratio of malitol to Splenda is higher, making it literally crappier. The last few months, Hershey has been the only dark chocolate I've been able to find since Russell Stover, my usual sou...

Re: Chocolate sprinkles in the USA (or: how to become a beloved national benefactor)

Hershey actually makes a good dark chocolate, which is the only kind I like. One has to be careful though as a leading consumer magazine has found that some dark chocolate contains a disturbing amount of cadmium and lead. A lot depends on where it is sourced. Cocoa beans from South America appear to...

Re: New Desktop Computer - Part 2 (Modifications)

Seeing all you've gone through, It's almost easier to assemble one's own desktop or tower computer. A lot cheaper too.

My current desktop was built in 2006 and is on it's third motherboard and set of components.

Re: Installing Mint (my way)

Installing Mint Cinnamon 21.1 on my new 500 GB SSD went well. No problems encountered. I did set up a swap partition, although I've since read that it is better to use a swap file instead. No matter, as I have plenty of memory. Cinnamon 21.1 is very nice and well worth upgrading to. I did have to do...

Re: Installing Mint (my way)

With my experience in taking the Upgrade Path from LM20.3 Cinnamon to LM21.1 now, I think that my days of a Fresh Install are over. ( barring I don't have to change my Daily Driver ) I really loved how most of my Preferences were retained. Did you use the graphical method (sudo apt install mintupgr...

Re: Installing Mint (my way)

I deleted Firefox and Thunderbird and replaced them with Seamonkey from a PPA. Then customize my Xfce desktop a bit, transparent horizontal panel on the bottom (kinda looks like a Mac, though I've never had a Mac), no desktop icons, favorite fonts, that's about it, then update. That's close to what...

Re: How Many Years Did You Try to Move to Linux?

My son, who was going to Tech School at the time, gave me a Knoppix disc in 2006 when I expressed some interest in the Linux that he was learning. I tried it, but didn't think it was useful enough to replace windows. I then received a free disc that Ubuntu was offering at the time. I tried it in my ...

I've tried six of those listed distros and I suppose Peppermint was the easiest and had the best features, followed by Zorin.

Re: "In the old days we...."

At one time I used a Stringy Floppy drive with a Radio Shack TRS-80. It used tiny cassettes with a magnetic tape. It worked quite well.
