Re: What's a good linux blog to follow?
Amazing. How do you get these times with not much to do? Presently, I'm so behind, I may never die!

Re: We don't know everything about everything.
I once wrote something like this in my profile for Orkut: "I'm sorry that I haven't been able to answer all of your questions, and that, in fact, some of the questions have led to further questions, many of which we didn't even realize were questions until we began. But while we may be as confu...

Re: Quick newbie question about /boot partitions
This is a great thread. It covers so much about multibooting that I found it useful as a review. Thanks, guys.

Re: ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE???
I'd just like to add that when I was very new to Linux, I had come partly out of frustration with all the viruses and other unwanteds that I had with Windows. But I still had problems understanding why Linux was not vulnerable to viruses. The light bulb came on when another user here pointed out tha...

Re: What are you most dissatisfied with in Linux Mint?
The only problem I'm having is really in my dated hardware, and not in Mint. I have to use Mint 7 for now, because somehow kernel 2.6.30 and higher won't run on this machine. I've tried enough different distros now to know it's not distro specific, it's the kernel and my hardware. I'm solving this p...

Re: weird white box at the left corner of my screen at startup
You could try the Fluxbox edition of Linux Mint. It should serve your needs. I also like this distro: http://crunchbanglinux.org/, if I'm allowed to say that here. It's minimalist, using only a highly customized Openbox wm, and comes with all the *cough, cough* codecs, like Mint.

Re: Mint Debian
If I can't get Mint 8 to work on this machine, then I wonder if I will get Mint 9 to work. Just in case, I have a Debian partition (with some minor mods) set up, since Lenny will be old stable for a while yet. By then I should have a newer machine, we hope. So, to bring it all back on topic, it woul...

Re: Ubuntu drops Human Theme
Yes, and no. Ubuntu is a sound base to build on, most of the time, and using it gives you a lot of work already done for you. You could start from Debian, or from scratch for that matter, and then you could get the same results but in a much longer time. People may perceive Mint as a re-brand of Ubu...

Maybe I'm spoiled, but 1.6Ghz is enough? Give me 2 or more Ghz or I feel like I'm on a riding mower! Kids, and I'm no kid, use computers in startling resource-hogging ways. For example, they will be downloading an entire movie while trying to play a game, check their emails and IM a couple of friend...

Yeah, if you do that, look at the code and determine how much is free, some of us would certainly be interested to know. I don't have the time to try that right now, but I am curious. I feel that if it doesn't actually break any terms of open source, it certainly violates the spirit of open source. ...

Re: Wireless won't always connect
You have to follow the instructions in the above link to be able to see the updates in level five. You see, the Mint Update Manager lists updates in order of safety, up to level three by default, but you can live dangerously and allow yourself to receive new cutting edge updates that are likely to c...

Re: Wireless won't always connect
Look for something called 'Linux,' not 'kernel.' 'Restricted modules,' or anything like that, will most likely fix your troubles. The others may say 'patches' or 'headers,' but they all belong to that ol' kernel.

Re: What Is Your Fav?
I was just thinking about this. When we grow up as children, usually our first experiences stay within one family. As Linux users, we do best to do the same at first. When we look at Ubuntu, in a way we are looking at our parent, since Mint was created from Ubuntu. But Ubuntu, being created from Deb...

Re: linux being hacked part 3
Once upon a time, I said paranoia was the only reasonable response to the true Internet environment we face today. What I was not counting on when I said that was that true paranoia is a clinical condition accompanied by a persecution complex and the utter denial of reality at all times. So I retrac...

Re: unable to boot any distro
More information please: it would be helpful to know if you were trying these distros running live from the CD or if you tried installing them first. Of course, SLAX is usually run in this way, LIVE, so I'm very surprised that you had problems with it unless you just tried installing it from the get...
