Go for Mate. Cinnamon is much more resource intensive. If Mate is too much for the old computer, a lightweight LXDE or Xfce-based distro might work.

You can run two different desktop environments (DEs) simultaneously and switch back and forth between them. I'm not sure why you would want to do this; maybe the lack of motive is why it's uncommon.

I know it's a 3-year old thread, but I just wanted to say that although no recent 64-bit kernel from any distro has booted on my Dell Optiplex 740 (AMD 5600+ 4GB RAM, GeForce 6100LE onboard video), 32-bit kernels work fine.

If you're looking at 4GB of persistent storage, it means you've got at least an 8GB flash drive which is more than enough to do a full install of Linux Mint (16 Cinnamon in my case).

I would just grab the appropriate deb files (you may already have them in /var/cache/apt/archives on a running system) and placethem on the usb stick. When you want to install the WiFi drivers, just copy the deb files to the target system and install with dpkg:
