Re: Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit won't boot after install on HP Envy m6 Notebook
Looks like my HP ENVY TS m6 Sleekbook is still running Ubuntu 17.04, but I had no trouble with the installation. I did install from my USB flashdrive in UEFI mode, which involved going into the UEFI when the screen first activates, and ensuring the flashdrive is booting in UEFI mode rather than lega...

Re: Clean install on new HDD won't boot
You need to reformat your hard drive with a GPT partition table as shown in the image below
Your hard drive is formatted with a legacy MSDOS-type (MBR-type) partition table
Code: Select all
Device->Create Partition Table

Re: What version should I install?
Go for Mate. Cinnamon is much more resource intensive. If Mate is too much for the old computer, a lightweight LXDE or Xfce-based distro might work.

Re: Can't Boot Back Into Windows 7
Shows how well I know the various components of grub. Looking at my HDD, I see that I only have one Windows loader (on /dev/sda1) even though I have two versions of Windows installed, Win 7 on /dev/sda1, and Win 10 on /dev/sda9, both of which are accessible via the Windows loader on the Win 7 partit...

Re: Can't Boot Back Into Windows 7
I've accidentally trashed Windows more times than I'd like to admit when installing Linux without first making a proper backup; most recently when installing Linux Mint to a new Windows 8 laptop. Some day, I'll learn. To your problem. The Windows backup media (had you created it) would have containe...

Thanks for the deb. Pulled it apart and manually installed the pieces (running Fedora 23 Dev). Works great!b2a8r1 wrote:I have a x64 build if you would like https://www.sendspace.com/file/7dcpi2

Re: Linux Benefit
You can run two different desktop environments (DEs) simultaneously and switch back and forth between them. I'm not sure why you would want to do this; maybe the lack of motive is why it's uncommon.omiran wrote: i would love to know if there are uncommon things i can do with Linux mint."

Re: Partitioning??
I multiboot several Linux distros, as well as Win7 on my desktop PC, and I keep a separate boot partition (with label Boot ). Upon installing the first distro (let's assume it was Mint 16), I installed grub to the MBR and /boot to Boo t. I then unmounted Boot , remounted it at /mnt/Boot, copied its ...

Re: SOLVED (almost!) All AMD64 versions of MINT fail to boot
I know it's a 3-year old thread, but I just wanted to say that although no recent 64-bit kernel from any distro has booted on my Dell Optiplex 740 (AMD 5600+ 4GB RAM, GeForce 6100LE onboard video), 32-bit kernels work fine.

Re: How can I create a fully updated live USB?
If you're looking at 4GB of persistent storage, it means you've got at least an 8GB flash drive which is more than enough to do a full install of Linux Mint (16 Cinnamon in my case).

Re: Install more Linux-distro's
One user's perspective on dealing with multiple distros - YMMV I use a single boot partition from which I chainload my various distros (and Win7). Each distro installs grub into the partition containing that distro. I also keep /home on the root partition, so each distro gets its own /home. Any comm...

Re: Can I, or can I not, install new software for live USB?
Installing to a USB hard drive (or flash drive) works the same way as installingto an internal hard drive. In fact, I've got a full install of Linux Mint 16 installed on a bootable 8GB flash drive. Not sure how the Ubuntu-based distros' persistence works, but with Fedora, back when my largest USB fl...

...Yet we get two new kids on the block (MATE and Cinnamon), and no OpenBox... Unlinke MATE and Cinnamon, which are full desktop environments, OpenBox is (just) a window manager. You could start with LXDE (a desktop environment that uses OpenBox as its default window manager) and eliminate those co...

Re: How to: install WiFi drivers from USB stick. Can you?
I would just grab the appropriate deb files (you may already have them in /var/cache/apt/archives on a running system) and placethem on the usb stick. When you want to install the WiFi drivers, just copy the deb files to the target system and install with dpkg:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg -i <deb package name>

Just tell the installer to mount my old home partition at /mnt/old_home.
I've never tried moving a whole extended partition; have no idea if it'll work.

Re: Buying hardware to run Linux Mint
Actually, I've found that most retailers I've asked have been happy to let me try a live CD on a computer I'm considering. I just ask the if it runs whatever distro I happen to have with me on my media with no video or wifi problems. When they say they don't know, I ask if I can test the computer wi...
