Re: Very old newbie

I'll need help sorting out what to download... Linux is different from Windows, in that you don't generally need to search for programs like "shareware" or "freeware". Mint (and other linux distributions) have "repositories" (servers) with thousands of programs. You wi...

Re: How to update Mint 17.1 libraries

Looks like the best option is to update to Mint 18. Can I do this through synaptic? ... I have to install each successive update till I windup with 18. Is that correct? No. Moving from Mint 17.1 to Mint 18.x should be a clean, fresh install. will the Mint b/u tool get both os and software files? Wi...

Re: How to update Mint 17.1 libraries

I don't have Mint 17.1 installed to check, but in my opinion, the simplest way to approach it would be to install Mint 18.2 or 18.3
18.2 has:
Package: libqt5core5a
Version: 5.5.1+dfsg-16ubuntu7.5

Re: Kids can't use computers

Yesterday, I had a problem, so I called Georgie , the 13 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked him to come over. Georgie clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong? He replied, 'It was an ID te...

Re: Undo the changes done to grub2 by grub customizer?

I am going to be moving from 17.3 to 18.3 soon, and will try again adding PLOP to the boot menu, without Grub Customizer! You don't need PLOP. I wrote a tutorial which includes instructions for booting a Mint .iso file on a flash drive, using the Grub menu on your hard drive. https://community.linu...

Please start a new thread with your support questions. Include the result of: inxi -Fxzo Creating a new partition table on your new hard drive (or SSD) is pretty simple. Boot the live Mint. Open GParted > Device menu > New partition table. This is mentioned in the first post in this thread. The firs...

Re: Partitions and disks

Also I have a question about resizing the swap partition on the SSD drive. I have 8GB of Ram so I don't think the swap partition would be getting much use. Does it need to be 7.9 GB? Would it make any sense to change the size? I can offer some thoughts on the swap. I have the same configuration as ...

Re: Partitions and disks

So I guess there is no solution to this problem. There does not seem to be a problem other than configuring your big hard drive - that certainly does not require a re-install. Having the operating system on the SSD is the best strategy, so you are good there. We can help with the configuration of y...

Re: Installing the new firefox

I downloaded the latest Firefox, and it sits in a folder on my desktop The advice from mozilla.org is to use the Firefox version in the repository... If you use your Linux distribution's packaged version of Firefox, you will need to wait for an updated package to be released to its package reposito...
