Re: Linux convert from OS X, iTunes encrypted songs???
I believe iTunes has a feature where you can purchase non-drm versions of most of their music. It has been awhile since I bought music there, but I believe that is an option. There are also programs out there that will strip the drm from those files, but it is a slow process. I did that for some of ...

Re: Something new
Very nice. Love the subtle 3D effect. Thank you. It's been awhile since I've done any artwork, and it was good to get back into it. :D I like this wallpaper a lot. Perhaps, you could make the LM logo just a little bit larger. IMO Otherwise, great job. It works well on my small 14" la...

Reminds me of the big nasty guy you end up having to kill to get to the next level in some space-shooter video game

Re: Need to boot to console instead of GUI
OK, I installed envyng-core and used it to install the nVidia driver. There's no nVidia splash screen but looked in xorg.conf- the driver seems to be installed. Google Earth is responding much better now, so all's right with the world. BTW, I tried 'sudo telinit 1' and the screen just went blank- i...

Re: wirelees activation
I got it back in September. I really like it. 14" widescreen, 320GB HD, 4GB RAM, Intel graphics, blah, blah. I got it at Best Buy (not my first choice) for around $600. I'm very pleased with it so far. It used to have Windows 7, but no more :( It's my first Thinkpad, but it just feels solidly b...

Re: Need to boot to console instead of GUI
LXDE may use xdm, so you could look for that in /etc/init.d. Also another option is as follows: Logout and login to tty1 (CTRL-ALT-F1) Then enter the folowing code to bring you to a single user run-level sudo telinit 1 Wait until a recovery mode window pops up, and choose the root terminal. Install ...

Just realised you are using the LXDE version of Mint, and I'm not sure if they are using gdm or another login manager.

Re: Installing NVIDIA Driver
I used to have an older ATI card, and on newer versions of Linux it just worked out of the box. ATI has dropped support for some older cards, and the open source driver doesn't do 3D all that great, but it functions. Try the open source driver first to see if it works for you.

Re: how to make command to execute after boot up
Sorry, I hadn't had enough coffee. You can put startup commands in /etc/rc.local. So, sudo gedit /etc/rc.local It should look something like this: #!/bin/sh -e # # rc.local # # This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel. # Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on succe...

Re: wirelees activation
Also you might give this a shot. Picked it up from the Ubuntu forums here , This worked for my Acer 4720z. The wireless card is a Broadcom BCM94311MCG. I performed the following steps in this order: 1. Connect the Ethernet to internet and get all updates. 2. In System->Administration->Restricted Dri...

Re: Need help practicing to install software
If the software is not in the Package Manager, you can go to the projects home page to see if they offer a repository that you can add to your list. Usually there will be instructions on how to do that, or you can always do a search to see if someone else has tried to install it. I've not found many...

Re: Need to boot to console instead of GUI
Thanks for the reply! Tried your suggestion and got: sudo: /etc/init.d/gdm: command not found I did a search for 'gdm'- no dice. I then went to /etc/init.d and tried to figure out which command might work, to no avail. Any ideas? Instead of the above code you can use the following: sudo stop gdm Th...
