Re: visudo/usermod

Sorry, you're right: Mint has set a password for root, Ubuntu hasn't. (see /etc/shadow)
=> "su" works with Mint

Basically that's it -- if you add one point: announce the new /home by modifying /etc/fstab

Re: Disk Drive Maintenance

On my machine (Xubuntu 13.04) it works. I don't think Mint is different in this. /etc/init/mountall.conf [...] script . /etc/default/rcS [ -f /forcefsck ] && force_fsck="--force-fsck" [ "$FSCKFIX" = "yes" ] && fsck_fix="--fsck-fix" # set $LANG ...

Or just issue in a terminal to get the partitions checked on next reboot :

Code: Select all

Re: Thunderbird migration

Though I can't tell anything about an automatic migration whilst the mint installation I can point you to the necessary steps. It's not difficult but you should mind a few points -- here's a howto and it's still the same: [url=http://fosswire.com/post/2008/03/migrate-your-thunderbird-emails-from-win...

There is no root password on a default Ubuntu/Mint installation, so invoking su by itself will fail.

Re: How to install with manual partitioning

Do I need the /home partition? If so how much space should I give it? It's more convenient. If you reinstall you don't have to backup and restore (recommended anyway), you just point the new /home to the old partition (or logical volume if you use lvm) and tell the installer to NOT FORMAT it. Anoth...

Re: How to install with manual partitioning

Does 2 GB PC / laptop needs a /swap partition?
If you don't have /swap you can't hibernate (or needs some effort => e.g. tuxonice). Usually you choose a swap partition at least the size of your RAM.

Re: visudo/usermod

typing your password when you perform administrative tasks is one of the BASIC security features. If you needn't then anybody, any task, any invader could easily get admin rights. Do you really want your box to be insecure like some old XP-machine? If you have to do a lot of stuff being root, then u...

Are you using a x64 Mint CD/DVD? AFAIK 32bit can't boot in UEFI.

Re: need to change from 32 bit to 64 bit (Solved)

using 32-bit should be fine. The performance difference is not that exciting ... Well, that depends. Generally when it comes to number crunching x64 can be 2 or 3 times faster. When you encrypt drives, use graphic tools like gimp, blender or any kind of raytracing, when you encode media or do video...

Re: Abnormal power consumption lap switches off in 1 hour

Ok do you think of any other problems?? anything fishy?? No. I had an pure AMD Notebook and any power related problems vanished with the AMD Catalyst driver. However, the AMD driver is a pain in the a$$. It's not provided by the Mint or Ubuntu team and it's not always compatible with the latest ker...

Re: Abnormal power consumption lap switches off in 1 hour

Did you install the fglrx driver? Maybe it's worth a try.

Best power efficiency is gained with the proprietary AMD Catalyst driver:

Re: need to change from 32 bit to 64 bit

No need to "uninstall".

You will be prompted if you'ld like to install alongside the other (old) installation or to replace the existing installation (or do something else -- for experts). Just choose "replace". But be sure to have backuped ANY data of value!
