Re: Ultra-fast battery drain on Acer Aspire V3-731

I recently installed Linux Mint Cinnamon... I find Cinnamon to be one of the higher-overhead DEs, especially the latest version that comes with LM 19.1, so perhaps not best suited for some laptops. I'd try LM 18.3 Xfce 64-bit (still supported until April 2021), and tweak the settings to dispense wi...

Re: Create Windows 10 Live USB

While I've not specifically done so for Windows 10, I've had success in the past with VirtualBox for creating VM environments, and found it easy to use.

Re: New to Linux MInt

... I really didn't understand all the command line stuff but now I know a bit more ... Welcome! :) Allow me to preface by saying most people don't need to use the command line to use Linux Mint. But should you have an interest in learning more, may I recommend The Linux Command Line book (it's ava...

Have a read of the Installation Guide, especially the Multi-Boot section.

Re: To clone or not to clone

Quick question related to Clonezilla: How does Clonezilla handle empty space on the disk you're cloning? If I have a 100GB disk and I'm using 30GB of it, does the cloned copy that Clonezilla creates take up 100GB or 30GB? Clonezilla only archives the used disk blocks, therefore the resulting reposi...

Re: External hard drive backup problems

Does Clonezilla support long file path? Again, Clonezilla works at the disk block level, so file names and paths are irrelevant. Perhaps you should just try it to prove it to yourself. Clonezilla a drive and partition imaging utility, which creates an archive of the used blocks of a source drive/pa...

Yes. Clonezilla works at the disk block level, so file names are incidental.

I can't speak to why you're encountering such problems, but I've used Clonezilla Live for disk imaging for years. It's not a pretty interface, but it certainly works as advertised.

Re: antivirus

It says "Don't install antivirus (yes, really!)." Yes, it does say that. I would recommend reading the article and deciding for yourself. Speaking for myself, I've been using Linux for years without antivirus. I'm also careful about what I run on my system, and follow other careful practices. I don...

Yes, keep your system updated, don't run untrusted scripts as root, keep your important files backed up, and carry on. :)

Re: Cloning system drive - is it worth it?

Just Clonezilla'd it. Was easier to use than I had been led to believe. I think Clonezilla often has the impression that it's difficult based upon its non-GUI interface, and the myriad of options it presents. In reality, it's fairly straight-forward, where I don't believe I've ever used anything bu...

I would start with a search of Gigabyte for that mobo.

Looks like you need to know the revision number of the model, which inxi doesn't seem to know. :?

Re: Is it rude to unplug a USB or should it be dismounted

If I just rip it gently out of the USB port, would the machine think I was rude and decide not to boot up ever again, or is that acceptable behaviour in Linux world? It's best practice to unmount a USB drive before removing it. This ensures that everything the OS intended to write to the drive is w...
