Fall-back mode on Mint16 Cinnamon

Hi all, I've been running Linux Mint on this old Lifebook T4215 since Mint 9 and this is the first time I've done an install where 3D acceleration fails. Cinnamon crashes and uses fallback mode. Mint 15 Cinnamon was running great, I'm just in a habit of keeping a separate /home partition and install...

Re: GNOME 3 by Linus Torvalds

The things Linus is c/o are easily fixed, such as desktop shortcuts or dash-panel launchers. But maybe what he means is that the end user shouldn't have to use editors to make these tweaks. Mint team could be looking at the most common complaints about Gnome 3 and answering with a tweaked one to fix...

Re: OS for 10 inch tablets

Yeah the Ubu Unity UI is suppose to have been designed with touch screens in mind. That's why the icons on the dock are larger and the dock scrolls. The WM is Mutter rather than Metacity so if you like to tweak desktop appearance there is very little choices currently. Mutter may crash occasionally ...

Re: PCmanFM vs Thunar - which one do you prefer?

I've had issues with PCmanFM supporting image thumbnails in the past. I had not taken the time to troubleshoot that as Thunar worked fine for me, you can always open multiple instances and drag & drop across.

I have the exact same issues with KDE4 on other distros as well. Thanks for the work around tips on retaining settings.

Re: Edit grub after add slave drive?

So sorry, Here is drive and lspci info. I'd like to add a slave drive but grub won't boot with it I'm certain my jumpers are placed correctly. Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x...

Edit grub after add slave drive?

Hi guys,
Grub refuses to boot my primary when I have a slave drive plugged in. I have jumpers marking it as slave and I can boot live CD, Gparted recognizes it as well. Do I need to edit my grub file as perhaps this changes the hda numbering?

Could this be applied to an mp3 player that mounts as read only? I can move files to it within another distro but not Mint8

Re: Launch Nautilus from Wbar

I believe this actually has to do with placing the command to exec wbar in Startup Applications. Behavior is as expected when command is placed in Terminal
wbar -pos bottom -bpress -above-desk -zoomf 1.5 -isize 50 -idist 4 -jumpf 1 -nanim 3 -balfa 0 exit 0

Launch Nautilus from Wbar

After minor editing of my Wbar file I can't seem to get it to launch Nautilus anymore. I've tried multiple commands and even removed the Naultilus entry entirely, saved, restart and made new entry. Hope someone might catch any errors. Here is the current file: i: /usr/share/wbar/iconpack/wbar.osx/os...

Follow up on retaining old /home

I just wanted to share a follow up to this. As said previously I unfortunately (or fortunately?) had to do a clean install losing my old /home yet switching to Mint on the desktop machine. While I had backups of photos, videos, documents, personal files etc., I did not have my desktop settings, fire...

Re: Inconsistant recognition of touchpad in Mint 8

Gary, A very helpful Ubuntu Forums member, Favux maintains a thread concerning this that may have options for you. It is quite long but the 1st post is kept updated and the thread may be worth reading through for you. I was lucky with my Lifebook Wacom Tablet PC and only had to install one driver af...

Re: Finding old /home files post install

Thankyou for the reply. I have other backup of personal files. Perhaps I should have chosen "Do not use this partition" on my /home rather than mounting /home & not checking "format"? No biggie, I can import my needs and fix things as I do anticipate these issues. I need to g...

Re: Inconsistant recognition of touchpad in Mint 8

Just curious have you tried executing in terminal?
apt update <enter>
and then
apt upgrade <enter>
and Reboot. Just to make sure you have the latest Kernal as there were recent Kernal upgrades for Tablet PCs.

Re: Cannot Login. Restarts everytime. Can't see any errors.

Just me, if I were in the same situation IMO since its a brand new install you could consider burning a new CD run check disc for defects and reinstall. This may be a quicker fix than troubleshooting since it is a new install and save you from having to mess with GDM and xorg config files in X11.

Finding old /home files post install

Hey guys -- While upgrading my Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 the OS broke (as it has before), I should've done clean install but was curious if the upgrade option has improved since Dapper. I do have CD backups, Anyway I decided to do clean install with Mint 8 Main edition since I like it so much on my laptop...

Re: Mint Menu on dock

As far as I know this isn't possible. If someone comes along to correct me so be it, but I'm pretty sure. Sorry :? Thanks, I was thinking the same thing as I can't even find a pathway that opens the menu properly. It would have to be a custom applet build and I don't have the skills. I'll just have...
