Re: Why I'd Rather Use Windows 8 instead of Linux

Although the thread title looks like "flame bait", I will relate my experiences over the weekend: My wife was away for the day, so I had a block of "playing time". I had a spare hd, and a Windows 7 install dvd that had been laying around for a couple of years. So I thought "why not?". I partitioned ...

Re: PulseAudio not allowing A2DP for Bluetooth headset

Re the "sleep 20"; originally I tried the script without it...it was flacky, perhaps due to a race condition. From my readings, apparently blueman calls pa, and pa sets up. Then blueman turns off (rfkill?) and pa unsets it. Thus the call in the script. I saw the same script (can't remember where) wi...

You can find samples of various over the air radar signals, as well as many others here:

Re: Strange noise on MDZhB (UVB-76)

A couple of decades ago, the US and Russia were experimenting (and using) "over the horizon" radar, operating in the high frequency bands; in particular around 14 Mhz. Lately, some middle east countries, and china have been using similar systems. If you load your audio file into audacity, you will s...

Re: No sound on Acer Aspire V5-123-3466 (11.6")

Hi..I read your link..in all that, the only reason (for me) to keep Pulse Audio is that it seems that bluetooth needs it to work. Not sure why that is yet? Other than that, since I don't use Gnome, and never will, those gnome dependencies do not bother me. At least the last time I uninstalled PA, th...

I did install the utopic package...no change...I still needed the script to make it work.

Re: PulseAudio not allowing A2DP for Bluetooth headset

@goldwing...are you sure the problem is with pulseaudio? You might want to check the bluetooth configuration file /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf...near the bottom there are some extra options that you could enable. I think there is also a way to make A2DP the preferred connection type (as opposed to head...

Re: No sound on Acer Aspire V5-123-3466 (11.6")

First of all, my apologies..it is the m key that toggles mute/unmute; it has been a long time since I used alsamixer. When there is a double o, as in oo, then it is unmuted or active. A red M means it is muted or inactive. On an acer (my wife has one) there is an "automute" that can be toggled on/of...

Re: No sound on Acer Aspire V5-123-3466 (11.6")

In a terminal type lspci and that will give you a list, and you will find out which sound hardware, and if there is more than one. Also since Pulse Audio run on top of alsa, you can. also from a terminal type alsamixer and that will show you the various sound inputs and outputs available. You might ...

Re: Bluetooth - PulseAusio Problems in Mate-64 Mint 17.2

You know, I seriously considered that, and also thought about going the cinnamon route instead of mate. OTOH, this old laptop would struggle with either one, so I don't think that would be an option. Only posted because bluetooth worked fine in Maya/Mate. Something must have changed in Bluetooth, or...

Bluetooth - PulseAusio Problems in Mate-64 Mint 17.2

Hi, Looking for some steerage on the issue of Bluetooth not working with Pulse Audio on Mint 17.2 Mate. I can start/pair a bluetooth adaptor with a headset (attempting A2DP). It will pair but will not connect. This seems to be a common problem with 17.2 mate. Note that it is not problematic with cin...

Re: Workspace / desktop issues on LM17.2 64 Cinnamon

@Comos; WRT point 2, I believe the OP means this: In Mint 13 mate for example, if you set up the workplace switcher with 4 "desktops" which is the default, and then open an app, such as the calculator. Then click the minimize button on the calculator app. It will show up in one of the 4 "switcher" b...

New installl of 17.2 has firefox make broken profile

Just a bit of heads up for those doing a new install of 17.2 mate...I did so, and most things seemed to work okay; albeit some just differently. OTOH, when mozilla firefox made a new profile (.mozilla), and firefox updated (I think to 40.0), I could not access my web-based email. When prompted regar...

Re: Will you try LMDE Betsy RC?

@ Distro-Don, Yes. ATM I am still using mint 13. When that is not updated anymore, I will look to see what non-systemd os is available. Again, debian is committed, so I am not spending anymore time on debian, ubuntu, and maybe even mint; depends on clem, I guess. Right now I have a spare hard drive ...

Yes, I do. That said, I am staying away from anything debian related in the meantime. Thanks.

Re: Will you try LMDE Betsy RC?

No; ldme is based off debian, which has gone the systemd route. I still might stay with mint of some other flavor. I came to linux from windows/servicehost, and am not likely to embrace the similar systemd/pid1. I guess it is wait and see.

Cheers

Re: PCLinuxOS...Really?

@exploder...+1 In fact, I have a pclinuxos installed on my spare hard drive, and am exploring its workings for the day that if or when mint goes down the systemd road, I will have a new home to go to. OTOH, I recently read on their fora that systemd is embeded in xfce desktop. If that means pclinuxo...

Re: Best way someone has compensated you for computer work?

I spend my winters in a campground in the sunny southern US, and am often asked for help to fix some sort of computer problem. Sometimes, it is merely that some education is the solution, usually MS related. When asked what I wanted for payment, my usual answer is; "I take cream in my coffee." Well,...

Re: Software installation is the one and only weakness of Li

Not to start a controversy wrt software, but most recently I had to compile gnuradio, and iirc there was some compiling wrt a mate desktop under debian, and also in an experiment in getting netflix working. A couple of years ago, I recall downloading sources from sourceforge, and compiling...can't r...

Re: Software installation is the one and only weakness of Li

This thread seems to be the right place to post this. If not, please retitle it and move it to a better place. The suggestion was made recently that my adding a ppa to Linux Mint sources.list had (likely) broken my mint install, got me to thinking about program installs in general. While I don't thi...
