Re: Best Mint for and old PC?

Re: Debian 7 Wheezy to switch to Xfce as the 'default' DE
Some of the top distros like Ubuntu and LinuxMint have switched to alternate DEs like Unity and Cinnamon/MATE, as their default desktop environment. Does this move reflect less trust in Gnome 3? I think in the case of Unity it is more about Canonical attempting to increase brand identity and in the...

Have you tried a LiveUSB rather than optical media?

Re: Partitions could not be unmounted
Maybe Mint has replaced the kernel for a non-PAE one in Mint 13, I don't know for sure because I have yet to use Mint 13.
Have you tried installing on the internal hard drive?

Re: Partitions could not be unmounted
Mint 13 is based on Ubuntu 12.04 The 32-bit version of 12.04 has a PAE kernel by default. I don't see how you will be able to use a standard download of Mint 13 on a non-PAE computer? The only thing I can think of doing would be to use an Ubuntu net install CD which allows you to choose a non-PAE ke...

Re: Wireless Firmware Missing BCM4306
Rather than go back to Xp, why not just buy a cheap mini usb adaptor which is known to work?

Don't know about Mint Maya, but the instructions contained here have always worked for me with my son's Broadcom b43 wireless adaptor in previous versions.

Re: Question on / root size
Given that you should be backing up everything you need to keep to external media, I can't see that there's any point in having separate partitions. I just go with one partition for / and a swap. Someone will be along in a minute to tell you the opposite, fact is only you can decide what partitionin...

Re: Mint 10 wont start after video card failure
Saved Thunderbird stuff should usually be in /home/username/.thunderbird As for the not starting, I think there should be a way of editing the boot-up instructions to force use of the Vesa driver so that it will start, I've not had to do that yet with Grub2 so only know how to do it with the older v...

Re: Gnome and XFCE
One way of doing it is to open Synaptic Package Manager, look in the History section (File > History) for when you installed Xfce4, it will list all the packages which were installed in that operation. Next, search Synaptic for all those packages and mark them all for complete removal. Bit of a chor...
