Re: install hangs while checking disk
Grrrr. I read that a badly formatted thumb drive can cause install problems. So I reformatted the thumb drive (FAT so it's compatible with other computers) and used unetbootin to recreate the live disk. Rebooted from the thumb drive, checked the data integrity. Still does the same thing. 'Bout ready...

install hangs while checking disk
I've been searching the forums and google for over 8 hours on this. Time to beg for help. I've been running Mint on my Lenovo T400 laptop for a couple years or more. Now the drive is full, so I need to install it on the new drive. I have a thumb drive at home with Mint 9 KDE 32 bit on it, but forgot...

Re: Word Processor Recommendation
Good tips VIncent. I didn't know about #2. I'll have to check it out. Another option, if you're doing lots of typing in a foreign language is to find a picture on line of the keyboard layout of that language and print it for reference. Then just change your keyboard to that language in System Settin...

Re: open office suite
That does sound strange. My guess would be that it would fix it if you made sure you also wiped out the configuration files for Open Office. But there must be an easier way. Is it in full screen mode (ctrl-shift-j)? If so, mine has a little gadget to put it back to normal view.

Re: Ieee 1394 firewire and MiniDV camcorder
executing Kino as root solved this issue for me Me too, But it should not be necessary to jump through hoops to use your firewire port. You don't have to jump through hoops to use the USB or network ports, why the firewire nonsense? So you run Kino as root and then go in and change the ownership of...

Re: login screen goes away - sometimes
Update:
It just did it again. So, on a whim, I went ahead and typed in my password and hit "Enter" even though the log-in screen was already gone and I could not see anything. It logged me right in! So I guess it's not as much a problem as it is a mystery.

Re: login screen goes away - sometimes
On an initial boot (especially if the notebook has been off for some time) I wouldn't expect a heat issue to crop up so fast. Although, over time, heat issues will cause component failure. When was the last time you blew the dust bunnies out of the notebook? It has no dust bunnies. But thanks. I do...

Re: login screen goes away - sometimes
It dawned on me after I logged off last time that the problem can't be a sticky "enter" key because if that were the case, I would expect the system to tell me that the password failed and I should try again. In my case, it continues on, just as if I'd successfully logged in and then hangs...

Re: Statusnet
I wonder if maybe they are having server problems at the moment or that page is down for maintenance and doesn't have a maintenance screen to let you know. Maybe it will work if you try again later.

Re: login screen goes away - sometimes
Could it be hardware related? Sticky "Enter" key perhaps? Good idea, Biker, but it seems unlikely - at least for it to be a sticky key. I don't have any problems with sticky keys at other times. But, I suppose hardware makes as much sense as anything since it's intermittent and happens be...

login screen goes away - sometimes
I've been searching for a while and came up dry. Maybe I don't know exactly how to phrase the search. About 1/4 to 1/3 of the time, when I boot my laptop, I see the login screen for about a split second and then it moves on as if I'd actually entered my U/N and P/W. But, of course, it doesn't get an...

Re: Linux Video Editor - Why no good program?
Thanks, mintnoob. I have to say that I'm pretty excited about getting into iMovie and beyond on the Mac. And I can't wait to lock eyes on the 27" monitor. I'm just bummed that I have to spend the money when I love Mint so much. But then again, I paid almost that much money last time I bought a ...

Maclife recently had a how-to on dual booting Mac & Linux. Guess which distro they chose! Here's the link. http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/install_linux_your_mac I'm considering doing the same when I get my mitts on my new quad core iMac. Due to the dearth of capable video editors, I final...

Re: New Gadgets: A Laptop with a Transparent Monitor
Impressive technology! But I don't think I'd want one. The glare from my wife's Toshiba laptop is bad enough without actually seeing right through the screen too. But it sure looks like it would make a cool heads up display for cars & motorcycles.
