I physically went over and solved this. He was out of memory because he used Brassio to build a 4.2 GB DVD backup when he only had 4 GB of free disk space. It used all his disk space up. Deleting some pictures and other files helped get Mint running again. He still has problems as we can not find wh...

Thanks lagagon for the quick response.

The Fortune messages are gone now!!!

I had to use:
sudo mousepad /etc/bash.bashrc

instead of
gksu gedit /etc/bash.bashrc

as this Mint 7 install includes "mousepad" instead of "gedit".
