Re: About dist upgrade

Remember when ever having a question its always a good idea to start a new topic. now as for your question if LM 8 is meeting your needs then there is really no reason to upgrade. just be advised that the repos are no longer supported. Thanks, man, that's exactly the answer I was looking for. I'll ...

Mint 8 to 10 upgrade

Didn't want to start a new topic since this one seems to broadly fits my question. Since it's release date I'm running Mint 8 (gnome) with no problems on a MacBook. Is there any compelling reason to upgrade to Mint 10? ... and I happen to like the theme/appearance from the 8 -- is it available in 10...

Re: Changing the remote access port

You may want to check if your firewall is blocking the new port and port forwarding setting in your router/firewall. Good luck!

Re: Dead desktop, no mouse or keyboard

Try attaching a different keyboard -- if you have a USB keyboard attached, try PS2; if it's a laptop, try an external keyboard -- I had this problem (tho not to the extent you experience) on a PPC installation where a primarily Windows USB keyboard didn't work but a Mac keyboard did. If you are talk...

Re: Bust Myths & Fears about GNU/Linux

All nice posts with interesting and provoking thoughts. I'd probably add one that I find sort of amusing in a sense that people very often don't do what's in their best interest -- a very prevalent and widespread belief: "you get what you pay for" -- which, of course, in its extreme meanin...

Mint 8 Ads on Mandriva Sites

Just noticed small Mint 8 ads on some of Mandriva sites -- the forum site and wiki. I usually visit these sites since I have Mandriva 2010 installed on one of my laptops (btw, IMO the MDV 2010 is probably one of the best distros, probably the best KDE distro and maybe second only to Mint when it com...

Re: trying to burn dvd iso

mintnoob (above) gave you probably the best suggestion to try burning a different .iso on a DVD and see if it works. You shouldn't have any problems burning DVDs with Brasero unless the ISO is either corrupted or defective to begin with. In Mint 8 it's rather simple: 1. insert a blank DVD (I usuall...

Re: Your Top Distributions

[Copied from my other post] IMO, this would be how I'd I rank the top 3 distros among 7 or 8 I've recently tried by user-friendliness and yet being powerful enough to meet business needs: 1. (Debian-based-Ubuntu-based) Linux Mint 8 (hard to beat the logically set-up menus, great looks, with multimed...

Re: LINUX MINT 8 HELENA MAIN EDITION - PROBLEM -

Re: Looking at OpenSUSE 11.2

openSUSE/SUSE is a great distro, no doubt -- I've used it since their German-based days (but after they moved away from being Slackware-based and more towards being an independent distro and incorporating Jurix). In those days, you'd get like a dozen or so install CDs and two massive manuals in SuSE...

Re: Slow Everything

Hi Newexperimentor, there are quite a few unresolved bugs in the AMD multicore version. I doubt that the 32-bit installation would resolve all of them since there are some problems with that one too. But a good kernel update probably would fix things for many. Check a little bit this bug reports tha...

Re: Slow Everything

Did you get any errors or had any problems while installing Mint? Why I'm asking this is because some of the errors (and there are quite a few of them) you are getting look similar to problems related to corrupted ISO or errors generated while burning ISO at high speed ... in which case you'd need t...

When I hit left arrow-alt to return to the previous screen, it only works with the left alt. How do I get it to also work with the right alt as well. sorry for the wrong info in the initial posting. I think you are saying that your right ALT key is not working -- unfortunately that is a rather wide...

Re: How about dropping Rhythmbox as default player?

IMO, Rhythmbox is just fine as the default if other players are easily installed by the user (which they are). As far as the # 7 "that new end users are the main aspect to consider" I somewhat agree, but I also believe that Linux is not Windows. If I wanted something similar to Windows and...

Re: Mint 8 Helena, Right ALT key doesnt work

Seems like one of Ubuntu's regression bugs -- it was a bug in some previous release then it was fixed, and now it's back again. Check here for possible solution (read toward the bottom if you use a laptop so that the media keys don't stop working): http://blog.andrewbeacock.com/2007/06/getting-right...

Re: DVD Rom drive is not recognized :(

Hi Serdal, At least several DVD movie players included in Linux distros can or claim they can play .iso files. IMO, when it comes to the .iso movies playback, your best bet is the VLC player which is available for all or almost all platforms. In Mint it's not installed by default, but it is availabl...

A: Microsoft Windows Vista/XP/2000; Mac OS X version 10.4.1 o...
