Re: Ever had a machine which can't load linux?

Did you try the compatibility mode of the CD? Its likely that there's a parameter to pass to the kernel at boot to make it work, possibly "nomodeset" but I think that's more for nvidia cards.

Re: VirtualBox connection with hardware

How did you install virtualbox? Its probably best to go to the Virtualbox website and download the most up-to-date one, last I heard was the one in the repositories did not support USB devices yet. Also have you installed guest additions? Once you have updated your virtualbox, whilst your XP is runn...

How to install a distro (e.g. LMDE) with no DVD or USB boot

If your computer is only equipped with a CD drive and cannot boot from USB drives, here's a work around. It could also be used if you have forgotten your BIOS password and cannot change the boot device. It requires that you already have Linux installed (or at least grub installed) before hand and a ...

OK, Eko_taas and anyone else who was trying to install with no DVD, I think I've cracked it, not sure if you're still interested but I'll put it here in case its of use for anyone else. I'll also write the whole thing up in the tutorials section. You need a USB drive for this unfortunately (~1GB sho...

Re: How to change the Keyring password?

Yep, you can also remove it all together to stop you having to type it each time, although that's obviously not advised as it means that your passwords aren't stored encrypted. Go to "Passwords and Encryption keys" in the Menu, on the "Passwords" tab, right click "Passwords:...

Re: How to make/get LMDE as live CD (nand not as DVD)?

Hi, Sorry for slow reply. It has unfortunately got me stumped. The only thing I can think of is unmounting your hard drive (goto the file browser and click the eject button next to the drives which show it on the left) and trying again. I can only find any references to that error in translation doc...

Re: How to make/get LMDE as live CD (nand not as DVD)?

Did you tell it to install in empty space rather than over then existing one? Try starting the installer from the terminal

Code: Select all

sudo /usr/lib/live-installer/main.py
(I think thats the right code!) and see if it shows any error messages. have you tested the MD5 of the .iso you downloaded?

Re: How to make/get LMDE as live CD (nand not as DVD)?

Ok ive been playing around with this and finally got it to work! In step 6, instead of copying just those two files, copy the entire contents of the extracted iso ([boot], capser and isolinux) and paste those into /distro In step 8, the new menu entry should be (for me): menuentry "Linux Mint D...

Re: How to make/get LMDE as live CD (nand not as DVD)?

This was last updated 26th Jan 2011, any questions please ask, it looks long but its not too complicated Unfortunately there is no way of fitting it onto a CD, there just isn't room. Something you could try, I've only heard of it and never used it, is to install LMDE "using Grub". There ar...

Take a look in "monitors" in the mint menu, otherwise, try pressing the relevant button on your laptop keyboards, e.g. mine is Fn+F4

Re: USB Memory Sticks

1. No. Any memory stick will do. 2. if it is formatted FAT (usually by default) then it should work in Linux, Windows and Mac 3. I don't know about Veetle, I've never used it so it may be possible to download a film on to it, however its very unlikely that it'll just play on your TV from the USB sti...

Re: Right click annoyance

The issue is probably due to Mint using "mouse-up" as a selection. What I mean by this is that if you press the right mouse button and hold it, the menu comes up. If you then move to an option on the menu and release it, it will select it. It means that you can select things in the right-c...
