Re: Petra is absolutely TERRIBLE!!! How do I downgrade?
Well if you read my previous post, you would know that the wifi doesn't work since i upgraded from petra. Now the damn login screen won't display. Instead I get this message, "login has attempted to display 6 times in 90 seconds. It's likely something has gone bad" The only option is to h...

Re: I'm about to quit Linux
Sadly, most of us came to Linux on a machine already running Windows and we just trudged through the fixes, workarounds, etc. Many of us were lucky and got all aspects working, but with the newer machines it actually seems to be getting more difficult because of technologies evolving, like hybrid gr...

Re: Does Not Detect Wireless Card
Probably pointless to mention since the OP already left for Windows, but the adapter model RTL8187B does work for users. I'm not sure what the conflict may have been with that particular machine, but others have had some success getting it going. OP, if you decide for a round 2 with Mint, check the ...

Re: Mint 13 KDE - wifi problem
Did you try resetting power to the router? I have one that when it glitches, I have to restart it because only Apple devices are unable to connect to it. It's strange...only iPhones and MacBook Pro computers are unable to use the router when it happens, but my Chromebook, Windows laptop and Linux de...

Re: Want to try linux
Since it's not a newer laptop I'd suggest Mint 13. It comes with the longest support (it's an LTS version - Long Term Support). It would also contain some older drivers than the newer kernels may have available since as newer kernels are released they are updated to carry newer drivers, which create...

Re: Had to give up on Linux.... D*mn it!
If it's working I'd just make sure your repos match the repos of Mint 14. If they do, just let it be and count yourself fortunate. If it borks on you, I'd recommend just running Ubuntu versions if they'll run and Mint won't. If Ubuntu also doesn't work, you may have hardware issues with the specific...

Re: Had to give up on Linux.... D*mn it!
Dist-upgrade is not supported nor is it recommended in Mint. That's a bad way to go about upgrading because your Mint repos won't update automatically and you'll likely end up with a broken system.

Re: BCM4313 unable to connect to Internet
The driver in the repo is broken so you'll want to go to http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php and download the version you need (64 bit I believe). The instructions are in the readme on that same page or just click here for the link http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/R...

Not a problem and glad you have it sorted. It's much more pleasant and feels more natural when you can do things graphically so it's cool that this one worked out for you.

Re: confused about root access
No, I wouldn't endorse it. I was more just using it to explain it better. Why not just open up the file manager with root permissions so you can do as you wish graphically? gksudo nemo I think that'll work to get you to superuser permissions within a graphical environment and be able to manipulate f...

Re: confused about root access
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo Easy explanation of root and why in some distros you can become SU (superuser) and Ubuntu/Mint you cannot. However, you can obtain root privileges in Ubuntu/Mint to perform functions so in essence you can have the same powers, but cannot just operate the di...

Re: How best to force myself to learn Linux
In addition to some great advice already given, if you test your machine from a LiveUSB and find the hardware detects and works properly, you should have the same experience with the OS installed. For so many, Linux seems to be daunting because they don't test for compatibility before using it, then...

After the fact but this worked for my 4318 http://linuxg.net/how-to-fix-broadcom-bcm4311-wireless-driver-on-ubuntu-and-linux-mint/ But that's the wrong driver for the BCM4313. this link was for the 4311, it works great on my 4318 so unless (and i could be) missing something it should work on 4313 a...

Re: Mint 13 vs Mint 15
You can use gparted to look at partitions and make changes, such as deleting, resizing or expanding partitions. You don't have to delete an OS. Just install whatever you want to be running on the same partition(s) you are using now for the one you don't want. It'll take care of everything for you if...

Re: Mint 13 vs Mint 15
I don't know if you'll run out of space. You can take a look at your partitions and see how much you have available in each partition to find out. If you don't like Mint KDE I would recommend installing another version. Download the iso and reinstall. There are several versions so you can run what y...

Re: Wireless stopped working on wifes netbook
You would normally see more than one option at the Grub screen if you had more than one. You just select the one you want to use. If you don't see that then the kernel is not the issue at all.

Another possible combination to overcome the hard block could be to try in a terminal (copy and paste it!!!!) sudo rfkill unblock all for x in `for i in \`lspci -nn | grep 02[80] | awk '{print $1}' | tr ' ' '\n'\`; do lspci -vvvs $i; done | grep "Kernel driver in use:" | awk '{print $NF}'`...
