Re: How about a Linux Mint BSD with Debian kFreeBSD kernel?

Cant see what the advantage would be and more than likely some technical probs and/or more than a few disadvantages to bothering with a bsd kernel . Not to mention kind of hard to call it linux w/o the linux kernel . Linux is named after that kernel. Though purists I'm sure insist on calling it gnu...

Re: Conky on startup

I went into Preferences and added it to the Startup Applications, with a command of "/user/bin/conky"... -create one file, name it whatever you want, for ex; conky-start.sh, -make it executable, using command line or right-click the file, permissions tab, allow executing as program, -put ...

Re: Limited to 2 Workspaces using Compiz/XFCE

Now if I could just get Docky to register the workspaces. Clicking on an active app only works if the app is in the current workspace. Can't help you on that, afraid might give wrong info as not using xfce intensively (just "looking" around on it just to see how it looks like", same ...

Re: Compositing...

Just tried with fake transparency, and if i tick the box to enable, it does nothing, if I leave the menu and re-enter, it shows I have not ticked the box. Can't say much on that, not using it for quite a long time. Last try on that is to open terminal, type cairo-dock -c and hit enter. See if it ca...

Re: Compositing...

Thanks for that, have already tried cairo, and it does the exact same thing . Do you tried the "fake transparency" in that cairo dock? If not mistaken, in "system" tab. Another dock that doesn't require composite manager is simdock (though i found it not to have full of function...

Re: Compositing...

for apps like docky etc. is there another way to get rid of the black box border thingy? If my memory doesn't cheat me, cairo dock have that kind of ability. Hasn't use cairo dock for a long time. You can try it. Functional-wise, it has more applets supported than docky or even awn. you can even pu...

Re: Live distro with Wine installed

There's no need to prefer apt-get over yum. Yum requests a package from the repository while apt-get has to update its offline package cache with the 'update' command. I have found the yum solution to work some faster, as you only get the repository info you need and not the complete list of 30000 ...

Re: Compositing...

Disable compiz first before you enable gnome-compositing from desktop setting.
Try use compiz check to see if your machine capable of it.
Install fusion-icon, and run it. From fusion icon, you can switch compiz to metacity and vice versa more easily.

Thanks Feed3, I had read most of that information but I had missed the delay box. Does increasing the delay solved the "always-on-top" conky problem? Just asking because i always use conky with compiz. If it doesn't, that's a new thing to me, would like to try replicate the problem so tha...

Re: Chrome freaking - breaking after update

How does one revert? (I mean all my instincts about reverting are bassackwards Windows based, and useless) open synaptic, highlight google-chrome, hit ctrl+e. It's basically force-version, meaning to say you say to the system, install and use certain version (that you said was ok) instead of the ne...

I'm prefer knoppix more, i recommend it for you based on what you have posted. It has built-in persistent features, has wine in live environment, very light in resources usage, based on debian (which i always prefer apt-get over yum and always like synaptic more than other, detect all hardwares on al...

Re: gnome 3 upgrade

I'd probably have to recommend to anyone curious about Gnome 3 to try one of the Live CDs available from the web site before deciding to try and update your system. I did, and I can honestly say it took me all of about 10 minutes to decide I hated it, and I'm *really* glad I didn't put a ton of eff...

Hi I'm pretty new to Linux and working my around it, so bear with me. The problem I have is that if I enable this then ...

and must be edited when the USB is inserted as a device in a running system, NOT as a running USB Linux (does that make sense?). Yes, you need to edit it from another running system, you cannot edit it from within the usb live running from that drive. workaround for me; 1. edit from windows. open t...
