Install from mounted ISO

Sick to death of seeing "USB" in the answers to this question. You are a wizard if you can stuff an ISO into a USB drive...
I just want to know what file to use for the install.

Re: Install without at CD drive?

Lots of progress, no real success. Got a good install on an old Latitude (original, no further model name) except that it is godawful (slower than Windows...yeah, that slow) slow and the Nexxtech 2.0 USB PCMCIA card didn't mount so the external wireless net device can't be mounted either. On the IBM...

Re: Install without at CD drive?

Got back to this today, no progress. Unetbootin did pretty well as advertised so far as install, but the machine still booted Windows. A look at the HDD I installed Unetbootin on suggests there are various Linux and unet config and other files installed, but it just boots XP anyway. The syslinux fil...

Re: Install without at CD drive?

Thanks for the tip. Program appeared to work as advertised, but on boot I got "ntldr not found" and that was it from it. All the files appear to be present. That was on my good laptop which boots form the LM CD just fine. I won't get a chance to try it on the target machine until tomorrow....

Install without at CD drive?

Is it possible to install LM w/o a CD drive? I've an old Thinkpad and it constantly returns a "no operating system found" from LM. The CD is good, and I've tried both the internal and a USB CD drive, both of which are being found. However, no amount of trying will get LM found. I've enable...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Doc, my point is that almost certainly in the vast majority of the cases the "user" and the "administrator" are one and the same. Separateing them makes no sense. I've not recommended Mint to a soul that has an "administrator." If you want to ask up front on an install ...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Nice kick about the experience thing, FR, and deserved I suppose. I think it's just human to want your audience to know you didn't start yesterday. However, such statements are meaningless without context and therefore should be avoided. I long since lost any sense of "pride" in my knowled...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Alrighty, I took a bunch of blows here and I'll respond. First, forget the Windows war. Sorry I mentioned it and should have known it would cause issues with the actual message. I'll answer a question that was posed: "Or do you dislike that a user cannot perform administrative tasks, like delet...

Re: Dual Boot doesn't

Okies, that went well. Trashed the entire disk. I had identified the partitions I needed to delete, but the app kept telling me I had to go to a higher number and delete from there. I knew that was dumb as the top level number also included my working Mint partition. So I reformated the offending pa...

Re: Dual Boot doesn't

OK, very impressed that Mint told me the command to install gparted when I typed it in terminal and it wasn't installed instead of simply saying something dumb like "unknown command" However, when I tried to run it it told me I was way too dumb use such a powerful tool and if my name wasn'...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Here is one reason: SEKURITY! Why do programmers assume we are all idiots? Why would it be such a stretch to provide a disclaimer that "You are on your own" and be able to disable all passwords and high priest blocks? I am trying to get my Mint dual boot working and need to delete an unnec...

Re: Dual Boot doesn't

I HATE sekurity! Had no problem installing the partition editor...actually impressed that the system provided the command. However, went I attempted to run it I was told "It's too powerful for non-high priests whose name aren't "root" so forget about it. If programmers assume all user...

Re: Dual Boot doesn't

You may have saved me some grief. I id'd with reasonable evidence the working Mint partition and was about to delete the other with PM. I'll try it from Mint first.

Re: Dual Boot doesn't

Hmmm....

None of the Windows listed under the Mint boot manager would work. Keep restarting. I had to change the boot disk to get Windows up.

Nuisance. I'd prefer to get the Mint boot manager working correctly.
