Re: Mint 10 Firefox problem
I have just installed the Debian edition, and both speedtest websites work fine. I assume that this indicates there is an unidentified problem with Mint 10 RC1 :( According to the FAQ on the website for www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk they say that: Q. What must be installed to use Broadband speed c...

Mint 10 Firefox problem
I have just installed Mint 10 and upgraded it to the DVD edition
There are 2 websites which I often use to test my broadband speed.
http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/
and
http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/
Neither of these work in Mint 10.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: Release: Linux Mint 10 RC
I have just installed Mint 10, and found that there is no Java plugin in Firefox . I can't find any way to install it. The initial splash screen of Mint gives you the option to install the "DVD" version of Mint, that will install it for you. Or you can just open the package manager and se...

Re: Slow Internet with Mint 9 Isadora
I have a laptop which is installed with the same version of Mint and that has no problems at all. It just seems to be my desktop computer which has the problem. Ralink cards seem to be problematic with Mint. This was the root of the problem with Mint 6, 7, and 8 but Husse's fix cured that. I suspect...

Slow Internet with Mint 9 Isadora
My internet is very slow with Mint 9 Isadora main edition. When I first start up the computer I can get download speeds of up to 5000Kbps (using www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk) After about 10-15 minutes, the download speed reduces to about 248 Kbps. A reboot restores it to full speed, but only for ...

Authentication for drive access
Since I installed Mint 8, I now have to supply my password to access my other drives (eg Windows C: and D: drive). Is there any way of saving the authentication so that I do not have to keep entering my password? Also, a problem which started in 2008 with Elyssa is still lingering - when a user logs...

SOLVED: Mint 8 ISO download problem
I have finally downloaded a good copy on another computer with Mint 7 standard edition. The Mint 7 laptop I used previously had the XFCE version. Also, the ISO I downloaded on the Windows 7 computer had its MD5 sum checked on the XFCE computer - perhaps the MD5 sum checking utility on XFCE is faulty...

SOLVED: Mint 8 ISO download problem
I am having a problem downloading a good copy of the Linux Mint 8 ISO. Over the last 3 days I have downloaded about 12 different copies of the file, from different mirrors, and the MD5 checksum on each one is different. None are correct. I have tried 2 different computers, one with Mint 7 and one wi...

SOLVED: Slow Internet connection with Mint 6 and 7
This seems to have cured the problem. Using the live disk, I did a download test using www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk, and got a result of 289Kbps I then entered in a terminal: sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M and ran the test again. The download speed was then about 5300 Kbps I will install Mint 7 thi...

Re: Slow Internet connection with Mint 6 and 7
Further to my internet speed problem, I downloaded Mint 7 Gloria, in the hope that the slow download speed problem might have disappeared. Unfortunately, the same problem still exists. It is still the case that Daryna works perfectly, but the internet download speeds on any later version of Mint are...

Slow Internet connection with Mint 6
I have had Daryna installed since it was released and it has behaved perfectly in all that time. I did try Elyssa for a short while, but it had a problem where, if I mounted a second hard disk to access data, then logged out, and someone else logged on (eg wife or son) then that disk became inaccess...

Re: Cannot mount FAT32 drive permanently
I too have a FAT32 external HDD which mounts when I plug it in. In fstab, if I have no entries relating to FAT32 (vfat) partitions, I can click the "Computer" icon on the desktop, locate the drive icon, click it, and it will mount then open. I think it is some sort of automounting. /etc/mt...

Re: Cannot mount FAT32 drive permanently
The suggestion about the "Hidden" flag sounded quite plausible. I don't know how it came to be set, but I removed it using Partition Manager and tried again. Unfortunately, the " Cannot mount volume" message came back. Thanks for your suggestion anyway. I can't believe that I am ...

Re: Cannot mount FAT32 drive permanently
I've tried both /dev/hda2 /media/data vfat, defaults,users,rw,umask=000 0 0 and /dev/hda2 /media/data vfat, defaults,users,rw,umask=0222 0 0 but neither works. I have a spare laptop disk still with Daryna on, so I put that in to see how it should be done. Daryna automatically mounts all partitions a...

Re: Cannot mount FAT32 drive permanently
With rw added, the drive does not mount at all. When I click it, the following message appears:
Cannot mount volume
Unable to mount the volume

mount: can't find /media/data in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
