Re: Howto: Remove Fortune messages in the Terminal

I'm sure Mint used to ask whether you wanted them or not... I think the check mark was ticked by default, but it was easy to say "no". Personally, I'd love to see them on a startup or login screen, but not every time I bring up a terminal.

Re: Custumize login screen

Is there any advantage to using GDM2? The consensus seems to be that it sucks.
Does Linux Mint have to use GDM2, or could it go back to GDM in future versions?

Re: AR242x with 6.0 RC1

Huh. I went and did the madwifi setup (as outlined in post #3) using 6.0 and the latest madwifi driver and it worked! :D

Re: AR242x with 6.0 RC1

Do people have the same problem with madwifi on 6.0? I haven't bothered trying it, myself. Apparently, www.atheros.cz is a pretty reputable site, and Atheros doesn't provide drivers for download on their site.   I figured I'd buy a cheap laptop with their wireless in it because of...

Re: AR242x with 6.0 RC1

As I said, I tried to use madwifi. The driver loaded but nothing happened, even after rebooting, etc. I'm currently using the different solution at the top, with ndiswrapper (aka the Windows Wireless Drivers tool) and a driver off some random internet site.

Re: atheros wireless network SOLUTION

In Mint 6.0 RC1 on my emachines E520, this compiled and loaded a driver, but wireless still wouldn't come up even after rebooting and doing modprobe again. It seems to be working perfectly with this solution: http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=18883&p=112868#p112868 ...but I...

Yeah, I tried that, but it didn't work. It compiled, and loaded a driver, but no wireless. Completely blank on iwconfig, etc. Current lspci: 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. Re: AR242x with 6.0 RC1

Er, specifically, his solution was to use the Windows driver from http://download2.dvd-driver.cz/atheros/ ... 0.3.85.zip with Windows Wireless Drivers. I'd rather not use drivers from some random website on a non-test system, though...

AR242x with 6.0 RC1

I have a emachines E520, and had the same problem as this guy: http://on-being-open.blogspot.com/2008/11/mint-6-rc1-on-acer-aspire-one-codenamed.html This is the relevant entry from lspci: 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. Re: Mint 6 DVD

Buying a computer with only a CD burner has been impossible for years. DVDs are also cheaper, so I end up burning the CD image to a DVD anyway. Putting all the available language files on disk and providing a bunch of other programs for optional install might bring the DVD version up to, say, the si...

Re: I have ton say I am dissapointed with 4.0

You're really mad because you chose a free car, instead of buying one, and you've found that it's impossible for a volunteer car-maker to design a part that fits every single car on earth without modification. In addition, the gearshift is too far away for your taste, and instead of finding out how...

Re: PDA syncing

I had to do "sudo modprobe visor" in 3.1 to get my Palm to sync... looks like the problem is still present in Gutsy:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/108512
One way to fix it is to edit /etc/modprobe.d/libpisock9 and comment the line "blacklist visor".

Re: Very low sound solved

By the way, 4.0 is based on Gutsy, right? The bug report is from Feisty... does anyone know if it is present in Gutsy? If Ubuntu isn't going to fix this, then perhaps Mint should.

Re: Very low sound

Hmm... that sounds like this problem from the previous release, though I haven't tried installing 4.0 on my Satellite yet... http://linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=5569&start=0 Nope, that doesn't work... it's already set at 100%, this can be checked by decreasing it - the sound beco...

Booting off the LiveCD in default mode, Mint loads and the desktop is displayed, as well as a blank menu bar. Nothing else. Had to hold down the power button to turn off my laptop. Tried again in safe graphics mode. Lots of nasty garbage flickered on the screen, but it seemed to work. I booted up fo...

Yeah, it sounds like it unmounts the drive in a different way... I noticed the option was "Unmount" and not "Eject".

Solved? Has this fix been integrated into some sort of upgrade, or will at least be in the next version of Linux Mint? Because I don't consider making users of one of the most common laptops (and possible other computers) to Google up the answer or sift through these boards to be a viable solution. ...

I have the same problem, with both a WD MyBook and a generic 2.5" external drive.
