Re: LinuxMint 18.1 + Mate 1.16 ?

I installed MATE 1.16 on Mint 17.3 with few issues. Do some googling. You'll have to update your GTK 3+ to =>3.14 but there are instructions to do that too. If you're on Mint 18.0 then the process should be even easier. Good luck! :D

Re: Install Muffin In Mate [Solved]

You could also try the Compton window manager. It's available by default in Mint 17.3 and should do what you want according to what I've read, while still being lightweight.

Re: Mint 17.3 Cinnamon crashing on Dell with 512MB of RAM

Agree with others who suggested your problems are probably due to a bad installation disk burn or image file. I don't care what the release notes say for minimum system requirements but I know for a fact that 512 MB of RAM is too little for something as graphics intensive as Cinnamon/Gnome 3.x or KD...

Re: How do I install Cinnamon over KDE?

@ Austin.Texas There's no reason to install Mint Cinnamon to a separate partition or even in a virtual machine. I've often installed multiple desktop environments simultaneously and there are no issues whatsoever. Each desktop environment keeps its own settings in its own folder within home. Switchi...

Re: How do load OSX on virtualbox, or run on MINT

Apple does not authorize OSX to be run on anything other than an official Macintosh computer. While it's possible to install OSX in VirtualBox, doing so violates Apple's copyrights and therefore I doubt anyone on the forums would contribute to such a tutorial and the moderators will most certainly d...

Re: New kernel on Mint 17.2 ?

Why did you install those unsupported 4.x kernels at all? If you're an experienced user and know to upgrade your GCC, et al then there are a lot of benefits to running newer kernels. I've been using the Liquorix kernels for ages now and never have any issues with them. In fact, my system is snappie...

Only Mint-metal-X themes showing up after upgrade [SOLVED]

Long time Mint user here. This one is mystifying me though. I just upgraded from Mint 17.1 to Mint 17.2 (MATE desktop). When I log in, most of my desktop icons are using my preferred icon theme, but when I open Caja, the theme is Mint-Metal-X. When I go into the customize desktop applet and navigate...

Re: Cinammon to MATE

You seem to be confused about some things. First of all, you should understand that MATE and Cinnamon are window managers. ... Wrong. You are confused. They are full DEs that incorporate window managers. Mate in 17.1 comes with 2 window managers, marco and compiz. I think cinnamon uses mutter (meta...

Re: Cinammon to MATE

You seem to be confused about some things. First of all, you should understand that MATE and Cinnamon are window managers. They themselves are NOT Linux or an operating system. KDE, XFCE, LMDE and Gnome are other window managers. You can install any window manager you like or even more than one and ...

You can use the liquorix kernel which is updated frequently. I'm using it now and it's at version 4.0-2. Plus it speeds up the system. :D

Re: Clone my mate panels to new machine

Why not simply setup one machine the way you like, and then clone the system to a custom installation image that you can then install anywhere you like. Here's a link to help you out.

Re: disable USB drive for guest

Before you begin, make sure your own username is a member of the 'cdrom' group. You can access users and groups from Menu --> Administration -- Users & Groups. Type the following in a terminal: MATE sudo caja or Cinnamon sudo nemo Navigate to the root file system '/' Locate the 'media' folder, r...

Re: Mint 13 and 17: have the developers got it wrong?

You need to boot the disk in a failsafe low resolution graphics mode. I'm not sure what type of motherboards you've been purchasing, but I build systems and frankly have never encountered one that Mint/Ubuntu failed to load successfully on. Also, FYI, Mint doesn't use Gnome 3. Instructions 1. Turn o...

Re: disable USB drive for guest

It's going to be difficult to achieve what you want because when a user plugs in a USB drive, it gets mounted to /media/username/something and that 'something' is owned by the user who created it and therefore s/he has full read-write access. The best solution for you is to use the cdrom user group....

Re: Linux Mint 17.1 “Rebecca” Xfce 32bit NON-PAE Kernel?

Why don't you just use another kernel that is non-PAE? You're not restricted to the kernels that are in the Mint repository you know. You can use any of Debian's kernels, or my personal favorite, Liquorix which is currently at 3.18. Just add the relevant repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list, run...

Re: Devuan (DevOne) Fork of Debian, systemd, and Linux Mint

I would like to see the answer to this question myself. I really like linux mint, but I don't think I'll stick around for an OS slowly being devoured by the init system. Linux Mint is not embracing systemd any time soon. The first thing you need to know about the Linux Mint 17.x branch is that it i...

(MATE 1.9.x has also been compiled with the newer GTK3) Qt3 was the toolkit used with ...
