Re: "Updates are available" MOTD on SSH

I think what the original poster is looking for is the script located at /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check

If you open your bashrc file ~/.bashrc and add the following line...

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --human-readable
That should do the tricl

Re: Submarine simulator

Cant wait!!! i love simulators and would LOVE to try a sub sim are they just for piloting or can you do undersea combat as well?????????????????????????????????? :?: :!: :?: The current version, 0.9, includes combat and semi-smart AI foes. There are nine missions thus far, seven of them are combat ...

Re: Submarine simulator

Do you mean when will it appear in the package manager? I'm not sure. OpenSSN was submitted to the Debian team for approval and it seems to have stalled there. The package is stuck in limbo where the build process, licensing and such have been approved, but no one has imported it into Debian's repos...

Re: Is It Ever Going To Happen

Did anyone else read the entire page? There's an entire section demanding DistroWatch not mention them because Rec is "against censorship". Don't talk about us, we're against censorship! I've filled my facepalm quota for the day. Regarding the upcoming KDE edition, I'm curious to see what they put t...

Re: Ubuntu One

Maybe you could post some details? Do you get error messages? Does the sync-daemon not run? Can you not login to your account? Have you contacted the Ubuntu One support team?

Re: Is It Ever Going To Happen

Agreed, Kubuntu is looking pretty good these days. Once my current install of Mint KDE hits its end of life, I'll probably be moving to Kubuntu to avoid the new rolling release editions Mint is coming out with.

Re: Ubuntu One

I run Ubuntu One in a KDE environment. Just installed it from the repositories and everything worked. If you're having trouble you might want to install the packages "ubuntuone-client" and "ubuntuone-client-gnome".

Re: Proposal to Change Ubuntu's Development Cycle

I'm pretty sure the Ubuntu team doesn't do these kinda of checks, they don't have the people power for it. Instead I think they rely on Debian and the upstream projects to provide most of their testing. The Ubuntu team is primary focused on repackaging software and tweaking it, not so much basic tes...

Re: Do you run Linux as your sole operating system?

I think that is interesting because web development and databases is one area where I find Linux vastly out performs Windows both in speed and ease of use. I guess to each their own. ok, what apps would that be? please list as i would like to download and trial on linux. both the DB and the web dev...

Re: Do you run Linux as your sole operating system?

I think that is interesting because web development and databases is one area where I find Linux vastly out performs Windows both in speed and ease of use. I guess to each their own. Personally I also find LibreOffice and OpenOffice easier to use than MS-Office 2007 or 2003. (2007 largely because of...

Re: Mint 11 KDE development

Agreed. A year ago there was talk of Mint KDE being released at about the same time as the main edition releases. Now it's been about five months since Mint 11 came out and there's no sign of a KDE edition on the horizon. I don't mind the delay so much as the silence. Is KDE going to be based on LMD...

Re: Cloning LM 11 on 10 computers

I highly recommend using CloneZilla Live. It'll let you clone a partition or an entire disk (including the MBR). Just put the CD in the drive of the machine you want to copy and follow the steps on the screen to copy the disk/partition. Then go to each of the other machines, put the CloneZilla CD in...

Re: Why people don't migrate to Linux

Most people don't know Linux exists. I work in computer repair and if you mention the word "Linux" to most folks they haven't a clue what you mean. Usually the few who do recognize it say something like, "Isn't that some software thing for geeks?" The fact of the matter is a majority of the populati...

New OpenSSN release

I'm happy to report I've released OpenSSN 0.7. This version includes some important fixes, fixes the X11 disconnect problem and improves the sonar display. Sound support and a few effects have been added. The AI is improved, torpedoes work better and there's a new mission which pits the player and a...

Re: Mint 11 KDE development

Or you could install KDE on top of the main edition, like a lot of other people have done. Still nice and Ubuntuy for ya there. I tried that and it doesn't work properly. If you install the KDE packages on top of the Main edition one of two things happens. 1. If you install the kdm login manager th...

Re: Mint 11 KDE development

@thenewguy I fully understand if you don't know what I am talking about since I should have refered to a comment by rec1940 regarding mp3. I apologize for this  No worries. Regarding the move to a Debian base, does anyone know if the Debian version of Mint supports Ubuntu's Software Center an...

Re: Mint 11 KDE development

@thenewguy and others. If you want to use SOX for mp3 the latest version in the repos is 14.3.2-1 (and included in the repos is libsox-fmt-mp3 14.3.2-1). So I'm not sure what you are talking about. You may want to check the repositorys before commenting on them? Frankly, I'm not sure what _you_ are...

Re: Mint 11 KDE development

Yes, I'm familiar with the new method of updating LMDE introduced and I think it's a step in the right direction. However, this doesn't actually address any of my concerns above. I'd also like to point out I wasn't talking about Sid when I mentioned Debian's non-Stable branch wasn't suitable for me ...

Re: Mint 11 KDE development

Obviously we have very different experiences and different expectations. Which is fine, to each their own. However, that doesn't change the fact that this change came largely out of left field and there hasn't been (to my knowledge) any explanation given for the switch. I don't like that an upgrade ...
