I started with a single .lua containing all the gauges but for whatever reason, this broke the functionality of the outer numerals changing color.

It looks like you may have changed the name of the .lua file. Did you make sure to edit the name of the .lua file called from the config file to match? I'm not completely sure if naming the file ".lua" is acceptable to conky, you may need to edit that to "gauge.lua" or something...

If you dont want to use the titled clock conky, I have this without the text bubble for the robot. If you would like that as well just let me know

There can never be enough gauges!

Added CPU load % gauges for all 8 threads, and widened the top of conky to match the width of the gauge arrays:

Felt like continuing to play with the cartoon conky. I enabled outlines on the graphs and added 8 gauges for individual cpu thread MHz output. With the addition of the gauges I may need to widen the top part a bit so its all even and not flaring out at the bottom:
