Re: Grub standalone install

Many thanks for your replies.

I managed to resolve the situation by deleting the partition instead of overwriting it.

But my original question remains: Such an essential part of the OS should be more user friendly.

Grub standalone install

Hi, The forum description says there are no "stupid" questions, so here we go: I am trying to install LMDE 5 onto a HD with 4 partitions in a Dell Optiplex 780 (not the newest machine but always served me well so far). When asked, I chose to install Grub to the HD root in order for all par...

Re: 64bit version incredibly slow

The other machines I tried this on are two Dell Optiplex 780 desktops and a HP Stream 10 laptop. They are older but classed as 64bit compatible and suffered from the same problem. So I went back to 32bit. But it seemed disappointing.

64bit version incredibly slow

Hi, I have installed LMDE4 on various machines within the family and have a bit of a problem: The 32bit version runs absolutely fine, but some software is no longer supported on it. Installing the 64bit version gives me lots o problems by being incredibly slow. At first I thought this was because th...

Re: Sysmonitor: What is "Load average"?

Your CPU is idle 68% of the time, so I wouldn't worry. I know, but it still does not solve the problem. For comparison, I have a 14 year old netbook, running at 900MHz with 2GB RAM. This is absolutely fine with LMDE3 32bit, not lockups, only slightly slow as to be expected. But is not capable of ru...

Re: Sysmonitor: What is "Load average"?

Hi Axis, I am using the sysmonitor@orcus app that can be installed in the system tray. There is also a separate graph for swap activity that stays completely down. Please find 3 screen shots attached: Laptop graph: Yellow = CPU, Blue = Memory, Empty = Swap, Green = Network, Red = Load I had just sta...

Sysmonitor: What is "Load average"?

Hi, I hope I've picked the right forum for this question (otherwise, please move as appropriate) I have several PCs and laptops running on LMDE, but something has stopped me from upgrading them all from LMDE3 to LMDE4: Ever since I did the upgrade from LMDE3 32bit MATE to LMDE 64bit CINNAMON on the ...

Re: LMDE 3 to reach EOL (End-Of-Life) on July 1st

I am a bit confused... I installed LMDE3 beta in August 2018 and I think it became the main version later that year and I was under the impression it would be supported for 5 years (LTR), i.e. up to 2023. The problem is, I installed this for a number of friends and relatives and promised them they w...

Re: Mint Update no longer showing in task bar

Hi Carum,

Many thanks, but it doesn't seem to be something as trivial as that. It happens when I am asked for my root password (e.g. when changing a printer setting or applying updates). I am 100% sure I type the correct password, but the system refuses me.

Re: Mint Update no longer showing in task bar

OK, the icon seems to reappear with the above. Many thanks. But I am still puzzled why I sometimes am not able to log in with my root password. I am absolutely sure to type in the right one, no caps lock is on etc. but the log in window just gives me a shake. This panicks me a bit. Then, after a cou...

Mint Update no longer showing in task bar

I think I'd better make this a separate thread: After the latest update to Mint Update, it no longer shows in the task bar. This happens on all machines where I performed the update. Of course, you can call the application from the menu, but I am maintaining a few machines for less savvy computer us...

No proper shutdown?

Hi guys, sorry I have run into another problem I need some help with, please: I have a Dell Optiplex 780 that I boot with LMDE in German from an external USB HD. From time to time, I found that this installation gets messed up, which presents in some applets in the system tray not being loaded (Mint...

Re: Root account is locked. Cannot access console.

Hi, Sorry for the delay. Despite all efforts, I have not been able to get to a root prompt and have now started to re-create the original customised installation on a different disk (still have the USB, out of interest). I made, however, an interesting observation: I did the original installation on...

Re: Root account is locked. Cannot access console.

Further update: I found this link https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/79159/i-have-to-press-enter-on-startup-raspberry-pi The Raspberry PI uses a Debian flavour called Raspbian. The discussion suggests that adding fsck.repair=yes to cmdline.txt The only problem is that we do not have cmd...

Many thanks for looking at it from so many angles. Let's see how many of your questions I can answer: > Do you remember seeing the "dm-raid45 not found in the module.dep" error before this problem? I don't remember seeing it, mainly because it may have flashed past too quickly. The thread ...
