Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking Testing - read here first-10/

Upgraded virtualbox Oracle ubu lucid version 3.2.8 to natty version 4.0.6 today. It's working well. Some might cry, uhh, a ubu package... but i'm not a friend of vb, use it very seldom and will find a solution if this one is giving up :) Why use a vbox packaged offered by Ubuntu when you can get up...

Re: Clam AV Not updating

Don't you already have the ClamAV PPA added to your system? Try again, I guess...

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-clamav/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Re: Clam AV Not updating

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure clamav-freshclam

(You could also just manually open up /etc/clamav/freshclam.conf with a text editor and append a mirror site, but using dpkg is easier.)

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking Testing - read here first-10/

Warning for those tracking testing...libfreetype6 (version 2.4.6-1) has just arrived, and I've noticed that this new upstream release makes monospace font rendering rather ugly (rather noticeable with my Conky configuration). Bug has already been reported to the Debian BTS earlier; see here: http://...

Re: LMDE netinstall

If you want a netinstall image, I would simply propose that you download one of the official Debian netinst .isos, and add the LMDE repositories to your sources.list post-install. Clem and co. are already planning to release several LMDE spinoffs (aside from Gnome, there's Xfce and the upcoming KDE)...

Re: Can't Get to Appearance Preferences

In a terminal:

Code: Select all

mv ~/.gconf ~/.gconf_old

Now logout, and log back in. You'll get your default desktop, icon theme, wallpaper, font preferences, etc. back, and you should be able to run gnome-appearance-properties without an issue.

Re: How do I use Python?

Open up a terminal and enter: python To get access to the python interpreter (on Mint 10/Ubuntu Maverick, that'll give you Python 2.6.6). Since it sounds like you're accustomed to using Python on Windows, you might want to take note that in order to exit, you need to use CTRL + D (not Z). If you wan...

Re: i need a program that will do it all

Sounds like you're looking for an IDE that supports multiple languages and is customizable/extensible with plugins to get the features you want. A lot of IDEs would fit this description, but if you're looking for a bulky IDE that could possibly "do it all", my advice would be to look into ...

Re: How to start samba server automatically

gksudo gedit /etc/rc.local Insert "service smbd restart" into that file (before the "exit 0" line). Alternatively, you could look into manipulating your init system to get Samba to start automatically at boot. I can't help you here as I'm not familiar with Upstart, but if you we...

http://snapshot.debian.org/ is your friend if you ever need to find specific versions of .deb packages. (However, ideally you'd use APT pinning to downgrade packages to the version you want.) http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian/20110619T033057Z/pool/main/x/xorg-server/xserver-xorg-core_1.10.2-...

Re: General End of Life Support Options

It looks like LTS repositories at Ubuntu are kept online for 2/3 years after EOL, and the non-LTS for half a year or something like that. (The Dapper, Hardy and Karmic repo's are still online while Intrepid and Jaunty aren't) Dapper and Hardy are still supported (LTS server - 5 years). I dunno exac...

Re: Mangler anyone?

It will be added to Mint from Mint 12 onwards, once Mangler makes its way through Ubuntu Oneiric's repositories. Mint itself does not host many packages, and relies on Ubuntu (or Debian for LMDE) for upstream packages.

Re: For when your system just freezes

REISUB is the method I'd recommend as well if your system is completely unresponsive; it's certainly safer than just pressing the power button. This might be worth a read, if you're interested in knowing what REISUB does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key#.22Raising_Elephants.22_mnemonic_...

Thankfully, there's almost always more than 1 way to do things with Linux and FOSS in general, so don't feel compelled to learn Perl if you don't want to. ;)

Re: Mangler anyone?

I've already packaged it for Debian (see http://packages.qa.debian.org/m/mangler.html), so for LMDE users, this is all that's required: sudo apt-get install mangler For Ubuntu Oneiric, see above. For Ubuntu Natty (Mint 11) and earlier, I've backported my Mangler packaging in Debian to my PPA, which ...

Re: How to upgrade to Mint 11 Main instead of clean install?

So I would manually open all 10 of those files that came up with that command, one by one? Doable, but kind of a pain in the ass for something that could be simple. There are faster and more efficient alternatives (e.g. using regular expressions in Perl), but I don't want to make this any more comp...

Re: General End of Life Support Options

Vincent just said that the repositories will be taken offline. This is not true. Everything remains online & working but no more updates. Afaik, the repositories are indeed taken offline a certain amount of time after a release is declared EOL, or at least they are no longer accessible (http://...
