Re: ssh, ping and "no route to host" message in network
I have my computers set up in a similar manner, some wired Ethernet and some wireless. On all of the machines, regardless of wired/wireless, I do the following: 1. "reserve" a specific IP address (192.168.1.101, 192.168.1.102, etc.) for each machine in the router/dhcp according to MAC addr...

...ah. and I now see, after responding, that you say you're running Cinnamon. Probably posted here in the XFCE section by mistake. I'm not sure what mechanism Cinnamon uses for application shortcuts and such -- I've never run Cinnamon for more than a few minutes, as it is not compatible with my (ver...

You may create one, if you desire. From the menu, choose 'Settings' then 'Keyboard' In the Keyboard dialog, choose the second tab labeled "Application Shortcuts" Click on the Add button. In the ensuing dialog, you'd enter the command you wish to run, followed by the 'hotkey' sequence you w...

One problem I see with your analysis is your misinterpretation of the information presented.
./ refers to the CURRENT DIRECTORY
/ refers to the ROOT DIRECTORY
(clearing up this misunderstanding should make it evident why you get the same results with or without the ./ prefix.

Re: Firefox bookmarks transfer
perhaps you only have READ permissions on the bookmark file, but no WRITE permission -- that would cause the issue as described. Extremely unlikely in this case. Extreme rush to judgement in this case on your part, is more like it. Do you know what the default permissions on the file are supposed t...

Re: Mint 18.1 Cinnamon cpio command help
Thank you Brian for your reply. I have already have 260 GB of data on sdc. If I use the dd command as suggested by you,it will over write the old contents of sdc. I had used cpio in the past but have forgotten how to use block size. cpio is a pretty elegant solution, believe me. Tar should work too ...

Re: Mint 18.1 Cinnamon cpio command help
are you married to the idea of using cpio? I prefer dd, as it 'seems' more straightforward to me. let's say your aging disk (with the thousands of files and hundreds of folders) is on /dev/sdb, and your new disk is on /dev/sdc -- the dd command line to copy *everything* from /dev/sdb to /dev/sdc wou...

you should install grub to /dev/sda [and not /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, or /dev/sda3].

if you make changes to /etc/default/grub, you should probably run sudo update-grub to write those changes out to a new grub.cfg

sure. ...but, you may need to do it manually. create an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (or edit the one that's there) to give you something like: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout0" Screen 0 "Screen0" 1920 0 Screen 1 "Screen1" Above "Screen0" InputD...

Re: Mint 17 Permissions Problem
NTFS is not ext4. You can't set "Linux permissions" on a non-Linux filesystem.
You can still store your data on NTFS (your windows disk(s)), but you can't store any access permissions that accompany them... nor can you set executable permissions on them.

Re: My Dilemma - Told in past to set up Admin and User - Why
yeah, it can be confusing, I'll admit. also, in more recent versions of Windows, you're in "user" mode whether you know it or not, and you need to specifically open something (such as terminal) "as Administrator"... it's all about protecting you from yourself, and preserving the ...

Re: nVidia drivers change boot screen
I ran into this issue as well. The initial video resolution has probably been set to 640x480 during your video driver installation. Here's how you can fix it: sudo vi /etc/default/grub (or, use whichever editor you're comfortable with, and since you'll be writing outside your home directory, you'll ...
