Re: Upgraded from 18.3 to 19, fails to login.

My upgrade failed too. Grub was not installed to the same place as the 18.3 install (/dev/sda1), it was attempted to be installed on one of my other hard drives' partitions that was formatted as NTFS. So the upgrade failed to boot so I installed LM 19 rather than trying to trouble-shoot a failed upg...

Update manager SHA1 error

Hi, Since changing the main repo in software sources, I get the following error message "W: http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/debian/dists/lsb3.2/Release.gpg: Signature by key F8897B6F00075648E248B7EC24CBF5474CFD1E2F uses weak digest algorithm (SHA1)". Re: Update manager and kernel updates [SOLVED]

I have always installed all levels. Never before have kernel updates been installed this way. I have seen the packages being downloaded and processed in some way, but I have always had to go to Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels to actually install them. Today, the kernels were installed automati...

Re: Update manager and kernel updates

Hi chaps,

Pjotr, thanks for the interesting link. I have always installed level 5 updates (and all others) and never ever had an issue.

I'll consider this solved.

Thanks for the help and have a great weekend.

Update manager and kernel updates [SOLVED]

Hi, I have just noticed that Update manager has updated my kernel without my having to do so explicitly by going to Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels. Is this the new way of doing things regarding kernel updates? I do not mind, it just came as a surprise. I always update my kernel so actually pr...

Re: Login screen comes too slow after NVIDIA drivers install

It is not the multibooting that is the issue.

I would live to use the proprietary drivers, but the delay in booting is unacceptable and I do not do anything (luckily) that actually needs them.

Re: Off-screen strangeness

Thanks for your reply. Whilst my laptop *does* have a second graphics card, the laptops had 5 distros installed on it and only Linux Mint KDE has the issue. Also, previous version of Mint KDE worked fine on the same hardware.

Off-screen strangeness

I installed KDE 16 RC and upgraded to the full version using the instructions. Whenever Firefox loads, the window is positioned WAAAAY off-screen to the right. It is very easy to move it back but it keeps on happening with each reboot. Is there a permanent fix for this? Mint 15 KDE was okay and Mint...

Re: nVidia drivers and delayed boot

Normally, these drivers do not cause a problem with Mint. Installing them is one of the first things I do after an install. I have not checked which drivers my other distros are using on the same PC, but none have the issue.

Cheers

Also having the issue with nVidia proprietary drivers which were not present in the previous versions of Mint.

Don't know whether the issue is with nVidia or Mint.

nVidia drivers and delayed boot

Linux Mint 16. Once I have installed the nVidia proprietary drivers, there is an extra 10-15 seconds added onto the boot time. This goes once the graphic card drivers are reverted to the nouveau ones. The recommended driver is the one I install. This issue has not been present on previous versions o...

Re: Mate spin and Cinnamon install issue

That is the way that I do it, Mate spin then Cinnamon; primarily as Mate has to be set up to appear as it does in the proper spin.

However, installing Cinnamon from the Software Manager does not work; package manager does.

Re: Mate spin and Cinnamon install issue

Because I like to have both desktops in one installation rather than having two separate ones. To change desktop I just have to logout, change desktop and then login rather than rebooting.

Mate spin and Cinnamon install issue

Hi, I download and install the Mate edition and then install Cinnamon over the top. I find it easier then the other way around. Below is my experience with the release version of Mint 16 Mate spin. I usually use the package manager, but just tried to use the software manager to install Cinnamon. It ...

Re: In place upgrades

Had a few strange issues so decided to do clean installs. Not all of the issues were fixed by this, but judging from the size of my backups, an in-place upgrade occupies more than twice the disk space of a clean install. Lord knows what rubbish is left behind. I set up my Linux distros similarly so ...

Re: In place upgrades

(but anybody with enough know-how to solve any issues from doing in place upgrades will also already possess all the know-how to do the in place upgrade manually themselves). I just backup before I upgrade. One upgrade stalled, likely because I did not leave it alone. I restored the older version a...

In place upgrades

I have been pleasantly surprised to be offered in-place upgrades on all my Kubuntu and Xubuntu installs, from 13.04 > 13.10. They have all worked flawlessly.

Will Mint be offering this in the future?

How can I disable this repo in Mint 15? In spite of what has been written elsewhere, this Mint does use the repo as that is what my error messages are saying  .

Re: Will swap partition of Mint 14 be recognized by Mint 15?

There is a minor issue with Debian 7 was regards swap files. The installer will NOT recognise an existing swapfile. It will always try to format it. One would have to add it manually after the install.
