Re: bumblebee for power saving only

I had bumblebee installed last year when it had to be d/l'd from their website. I had an email exchange with someone there, and eventually had to admit that it was beyond my ability to understand. The "bbswitch"? thing was not clear to me. How to know if it was working? Now that bb is available in t...

Re: bumblebee for power saving only

Thanks for the reply. Would you happen to know that if I installed it as per the above commands, i.e.: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia primus linux-headers-generic" that that would be all I needed to do if I only ...

Re: bumblebee for power saving only

Maybe I posted this in the wrong forum. Could anyone (a moderator perhaps?) tell me how to move it to a more appropriate forum, without going against forum rules?

bumblebee for power saving only

A fresh install of Mint 16 KDE 64 bit on a Samsung laptop with Optimus. I am only interested in power saving... do not need to use the Nvida graphics card. I found this from a review of Mint 16 KDE from a U.K. website:( http://bit.ly/1iroSvr ) "Nvidia support through bumblebee I installed bumblebee ...

Re: Synaptic and Update Managers screwed in UP5

You can remove the package lists, and then fetch them anew. To do so open a terminal and run the following two commands (one at a time): sudo rm -fv /var/lib/apt/lists/* sudo apt-get update That should solve the MergeList issue. thanks xenopeek that solved my problem. Only thing was it needed a reb...

Re: can't find minimized screens...

Duh...! what a dummy am I. I went to that larger KDE forum, and after scrolling through a couple of pages I found a promising looking topic header, and found the answer here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=43797 Seems I needed to add the Taskmaster widget. Works fine now... but don...

can't find minimized screens...

SOLVED.... Sorry for this dumb question... I don't even know how to search for an answer. I'm using Mint 8 KDE version. Just recently I have been unable to find screens after minimizing them. e.g. previously, after minimizing, say, Firefox windows, there would be a tab for each on the kicker panel b...

Re: login difficulty...

I did change the screen resolution in Xfce; and had a problem when I did so... several over-lapping frozen windows.
So that sounds like the source of my problem.
However, KDE is working well, so I'll stick with it for now.

Re: login difficulty...

New installation... fresh ISO, good burn... same problem. So installed Mint 8 KDE and everything seems OK. Same PC, same keyboard in same USB port, same password... so not a Mint/keyboard compatibility per se. BTW, when I did manage to get logged in to Xfce I used the same password to open Software ...

Re: login difficulty...

Checked the BIOS... went through every option I could find but could not see anything like USB enable.
Anyway it's moot now... after re-booting I couldn't log in. Tried 20/30 times... then gave up and re-installed new ISO.
If problem recurs with this installation, I'll repost.

Re: login difficulty...

I did first search the forums for "login difficulty"... but could not find anything. It's a PC, and the keyboard is USB. Don't think any of the points in the link you referred to apply... e.g. not a sound problem, no devices involved, no error messages etc. I sort of doubt it's a hardware problem......

Re: login difficulty...

No replies so far, so I guess my problem is unique. Logging in just now took about 50 attempts. That's a lot; and I'm getting discouraged. As I said, apart from this problem, my first impressions of Xfce have been very positive. I have Mint 8 KDE running on another machine, and I like it too, but th...

login difficulty...

Just installed Mint 8 Xfce last night. This morning had to enter password 4 or 5 times to login. Deliberately entered wrong password once and got "authentication failure", so know I was using correct pwd the other times. This afternoon tried to login again and it took maybe 20 attempts. Finally succ...

Please pardon my butting in... I'm not someone who is able to give technical advice... but I had an longterm problem with pppoe. Re: clock in 24 hr mode...

Language settings did the job.
Thanks for the tip.
Insane1... just to let you know I had logged out. When logging back in, the time shown under the username/password was in the 24 hr mode; but when desktop appeared it was still in am/pm. Have to go to Regional/Language settings to effect the change.

clock in 24 hr mode...

(SOLVED) Just a minor question... in Mint 8 KDE, anyone know how I can get the clock into 24 hour mode? In network settings>computer administration>date and time settings I have set the time , i.e. the digital read-out under the analog clock, to a 24 hour mode (e.g. it is presently 17:45; but clicki...

Re: battery level widget

I guess I've sort of solved this. I was running on battery for a few hours, and so plugged in the power cable. After a few more hours I removed the battery and operated on the mains. Tried to add widget in this condition but no luck. Or rather I did get a large widget - top left - of a battery with ...

Re: battery level widget

Thank you for the quick reply. I had looked at the same "add widget" drop-down accessible from a couple of other places... but for some reason I overlooked the "battery monitor". Guess I thought it would be called something else. However, I have not been able to install it. Got this message:" The ob...
