Catfish annoyance

Everytime I launch Catfish it defaults to only searching inside the 'Catfish' folder. I have to manually select my 'Home' before it will then find any results. It is sooooo annoying. I just wanna type and hit search!

Notify-OSD

I happened to have the Task Manager open and I spotted that Notify-OSD is running. Seeing as I've not seen a single notification pop up since I installed the system a few days ago I'm wondering why this is running. Will my system implode if I remove it?

Re: Linux Mint 8 RC1 Bug Thread

Why is Xchat in the favourites list but Pigeon is not? 'Average' computer users are going to be much more interested in IMing their buddies than hanging out in an IRC channel, and those who do wanna go in IRC know where to find Xchat.

lagagnon summed it perfectly. The application you mention is simply too niche to warrant inclusion.

Re: Itunes: How to

Linux plays iTunes files just fine so long as they are not DRMed (copy protected). No need to convert or install new audio software. At worst you will need to install a codec, but I'm sure Mint has the appropriate one out of the box. If you are having problems playing the files I'm guessing they mig...

Re: Make KDE 4 default DE for Mint Main Edition

What I have not seen proposed, but would make all the sense in the world to me, would be to have the user choose the DE they prefered on install, like OpenSUSE. Except OpenSuse just stopped doing this because they felt it wasn't user friendly to newbies. If a distro that isn't even aimed specifical...

Re: Make KDE 4 default DE for Mint Main Edition

I think you're missing the point here. KDE 4.0 was broken, it needed to be fixed. Gnome 3 won't be broken; it just will be different, strange. So there's no way to "fix it". You are talking about the Shell not being a good thing because it will be too strange and different, and thus hard ...

Re: Make KDE 4 default DE for Mint Main Edition

But Gnome-Shell and Zeitgeist and too new, too different, to be a success in the short, even the medium, term. Perhaps you have a valid argument about Shell, simply because most people find new interfaces disorientating. Just look at the controversy every time Facebook changes the home page layout....

Re: Fonts

don't get me wrong, there is a visible difference, but personally I had to go looking for it. To be fair, I think if the font looks radically different we are switching to something too 'out there'. Go look at the difference between Arial and Helvetica and it is ever so subtle, but Helvetica is oft...

Fonts

Not strictly artwork, but I think Mint could further improve its visual presentation by carefully selecting a nicer default font. As someone who owns a Mac, one of the most immediate things you notice is how much nicer all the text looks than both Windows and Linux. It is a subtle thing, but it make...

Mint > Ubuntu

I decided to play around with the new 9.10 beta of Ubuntu, the first time I've installed Ubuntu recently; and man, I had forgotten just how many little annoying things you have to change before you can use the system. Its doing an initial set-up where you really come to appreciate just how great Min...

Re: My wife and Linux...........

It sounds to me like your wife prefers GTK+ Linux (Gnome and XFCE). Personally if you sat me down in front of KDE I wouldn't like Linux much either. Some people just prefer GTK+ and Gnome over KDE (people with taste and sophistication ;)) This kinda presents a problem with Linux really... what if th...

You might want to feather the glow more, it just sorta splodges to a stop rather than gently fades like a real glow of light would.

Re: My Biggest frustrations with Mint & some suggestions

I searched in vain for a good dock for the Desktop, as my wife is a Mac fan and wanted to show her how great Linux was. Why not have an option for installing a good dock on the desktop Try Gnome-Do and it's docky feature . It is fast becoming the darling of the Linux dock, though at the moment it l...

Re: External drive not working

I'll hunt down a windows machine and try it out. Its ironic that it seems to be installing the free RC of Win7 on virtual box that seems to have broken the drive in the first place. I'll stick to Mint and Mac from now on.
