Re: Storm last night now laptop won’t stay connected

Blessings chopsui101 ! You could have at least said SOMETHING about your Internet delivery method. If you have DSL via copper pairs that have been in place for a long time, corroded connections somewhere along the line is a prime consideration for your problem. Blowing rain gets into places it doesn...

SOLVED: HOW TO? Write new Python Requests login request and data fetch!

Esteemed Forum Participants and Lurkers: My old CenturyLink Zyxel PK5001Z DSL modem has been rendered "obsolete" and I have received a new Zyxel C1100Z as a replacement. I have a running "DSL Meter" application written in Python 2.7.12 "Requests" for the old modem, but the new one has different "pa...

Re: Changing time format to 12hr

Blessings jeffogah ! Just saw this ... I don't know about LM19, but for LM18.3 Mate the following command lines using " clock " rather than " clockapplet " work instantly: mint@mint ~ $ dconf write /org/mate/panel/objects/clock/prefs/format "'12-hour'" mint@mint ~ $ dconf write /org/mate/panel/objec...

Re: SOLVED! HOW TO? Start Maps page in Firefox & close terminal ???

Thanks xenopeek ...

Code: Select all

setsid firefox https://www.google.com/maps/@40.100580,-77.117110,13z &>/dev/null
Your suggestion not only works, but it works MUCH faster by dumping ALL terminal I/O to null.

Re: HOW TO? Start Maps page in Firefox & close terminal ???

Thanks xenopeek ... I'm presuming the "warning" messages can be ignored without consequences (no reply needed). When I tried to find out how to close the script terminal after starting an application, I found a couple of articles on the "Google ETERNITY" that discussed the relative merits of setsid ...

Re: Can anyone recommend a good Mint FireWall

Getting back on topic ... Blessings WinParted ! The sad fact is that Linux Mint images come with UFW (Firewall) INACTIVE. Also, it is a very basic configured Firewall. If you want to learn more about it, here is a tutorial that seems to be pretty good. Even if you don't have any interest in changing...

Esteemed Forum Participants and Lurkers: * Linux Mint 18.3 Mate 64-bit LiveMedia ROM on LOCKED flash drive. NEWBIE ALERT! I have a script to load "www.google.com/maps" centered on my residence. Re: Differences? Update to Firefox 67 Ubuntu or Mint ???

Thank you very much smurphos ! I haven't done any comprehensive study between the differences of the new v67 Ubuntu Firefox browser, my older v64 Mint, and the new v67 Mint, but there are a few differences, and some must just be the product of the updated version. The Mint version sets the home page...

Re: Question about Linux kernel and OS development in general

jaakoppi71 ... If your machine can boot from USB or media cards, you can run a LiveMedia system right from the device. I boot Mint from locked SD cards or a locked Kanguru USB drive on my ancient (diskless) HP dx2400 Core 2 Duo. That way I always have a 'virgin' operating system which I consider to...

Re: Print one page of pdf

Use the following for your file name and it will work from anywhere ... well, nearly ... in a terminal session type "pwd" to see what directory you are in. It will work unless the file is in another user's Desktop and that user doesn't allow you access. I'm guessing it is in YOUR Desktop ??? "mint" ...

Re: Seems Mint 17 Cinnamon "Qiana" doesn't exist!

Hexeta ... Moem evidently doesn't have fun with USB LiveMedia systems, which is what I use exclusively. The answer is NO - none of the codecs nor Flash are installed in the default system, which is not really an "installation" on a LiveMedia. "Burning" the ISO onto LiveMedia is just a special load ...

Re: Seems Mint 17 Cinnamon "Qiana" doesn't exist!

Hexeta ... I don't know if you've discovered it yet, but as of LM18, Adobe Flash and the commercial video codecs are no longer installed in the default Mint system, so VLC is stripped of most of it's functionality. See: LM18 Release Notes Installing multimedia codecs offline To download the multime...

abrogard: I went through this recently when I built a LM 18.3 LiveMedia system. I kept having to switch back to LM 15 to use my HP-5000 parallel port printer because it was the last version that would support it natively. I don't have the details of the Google search I did, but it ended up on the H...
