Re: My introduction to Linux Mint

Hello and Welcome, Just in case you like the centered taskbar that is default in Windows 11 (I do), and if you have not figured out how to do this already, in Mint you can right-click on the panel (taskbar) and toggle "Panel edit mode" on and then drag the list of window icons to inside th...

Re: I like free stuff

I still do not know what to do with it, and is impossible to use many software compatible with Windows as Adobe Illustrator, SketchUp, many Blizzard Games, etc. ; and that do not having many functions in LibreOffice as they are in Office 360. I would like to feel everything is already well done yet....

Re: "Activation of Network Connection Failed"

Check what Wi-Fi authentication your router is set to use. These would be the settings such as WPA, WPA2, or WPA3. Linux Mint might not support WPA3 yet, so you should try setting it to WPA2 and see if it lets you connect by Wi-Fi then.

Re: Looking to buy mint installed on ebay what should i go with ?

Free Geek sells on Ebay, and they have Dell Latitudes and Lenova Thinkpads as well. Their laptops are used, don't cost too much, and come with Linux Mint already installed. Most of their laptops would have at least 8 GB RAM and would also have Wi-Fi.

I you are willing to go to the inconvenience you could keep Wi-Fi turned off except for when you need it for browsing or checking emails.

Re: Unable to delete folder

Right-click on the HDD where it is listed on the left in Nemo (file explorer) , then select either "Safely remove drive", "Eject", or "Unmount." Once this has successfully completed, unplug the drive, and then plug it back in, making sure that you push the plug all the ...

Re: How to turn down mouse speed?

Check if your mouse has an extra button on it somewhere, usually on the top about an inch behind the scroll wheel, that you can press repeatedly to cycle through 3-5 speed settings ranging from very slow to very fast. Also, make sure that you are changing the setting for the mouse, not the touchpad,...

Re: Cannot use Touchpad to double click only in Nemo

I have noticed the exact same thing with a Linux Mint virtual machine in Proxmox, so it must be a virtual machine problem. Using the physical click buttons at the back of the touchpad works, though.

Re: My method of culling photos from multiple drives

Your method seems pretty solid. I would suggest that for updating the backups on multiple drives, unless you are already using some proper backup software for this, that you could use file syncing software such as Unison (available from the Software Manager) or DirSyncPro (available as a portable .j...

I don't know if you have tried any of these things already or not, but here are my suggestions. 1. Go to "Effects" in System Settings, and toggle "Desktop and window effects" to off. 2. Go to "Startup Applications" in System Settings and toggle of any that do not need t...

Re: Low-cost used laptop (Thinkpad?) for Linux Mint Newby?

Lots of laptops and the descriptions seem to be very "unvarnished". I guess you just have to try your best to understand the descriptions. The laptop that I am typing this from came from Free Geek two years ago with a few spots with paint chipped off and with Linux Mint already installed....

Re: Trying (and failing) to increase battery life with kernel upgrade

Do any of these things conflict with each other? TLP, powertop, laptop-mode-tools? I don't know, but when I click "Okay" in laptop-mode-tools, it pops up "Error Could not apply all requested settings.". I searched about it on the forum and didn't find anything about anyone else ...

Re: PowerToys Equivalent

I tried using NormCap first, and it was easy, but after doing a few pages it seemed to continually quit, and I would have to restart it from the menu, as it would disappear from the systray and the converted text would not be in the clipboard. I tried rebooting my machine, thinking that perhaps I w...

Re: what program can i use to test a laptop battery health?

If you click on "Info" in the batmon.app, it will show the design capacity and compare it with the last full capacity. Too much of a difference between the design capacity and the last full capacity indicate that the battery is likely either used or defective.

Re: checkinstall setup: make: *** No rule to make target 'install'. Stop.

I can't find it anywhere in the Start menu so I have no idea how users are meant to find it - I stumbled upon it by accident. I once discovered it, I think by clicking "Help" from a Gnome application menu, but I had forgotten about it. I will keep man in mind for finding help for command ...

Re: checkinstall setup: make: *** No rule to make target 'install'. Stop.

Ok, sorry for confusing you with my confusion. I thought that it was trying to set up or finish installing checkinstall itself. I had installed it from the Software Manager just because I thought that it looked like a handy tool for compiling from source and simplifying installation. I ran sudo chec...
