Re: Cant boot - / is read only

Advice Thanks rene. I'm not at home tonight but I will do the rest of your suggestions tomorrow. As for the memory testing, I'm an idiot. I was just trying to do it without rebooting as it's always a pain to get the live session going again. I'll do it properly. As for the /swap, I thought it was g...

Re: Cant boot - / is read only

Other than drive itself, usually RAM is implied in issues such as this. It'd be useful to run a memtest from the Grub menu (on the system itself, or from the installer DVD/USB). Thanks. tried replacing the noatime with defaults in that line above? And why do you have a comma in that line???
I will do this evening, thanks. The comma is to separate the options, isn't that the way it works?

Re: Cant boot - / is read only

. If Mint 18.x was stable on that same SSD that would make things more interesting, but I somewhat doubt it. Op here, despite the name change. I knew I had an account on here but, being on a live usb I couldn't get in. Mint 18 was completely stable on that ssd for almost a year. I'll still work thr...

Re: Several HDDs - all in the same folder for server

Thanks all, I'm now at the point where I've got all the shares in all of the right places but I'm still suffering with the problem where the folders show that they have 104GB of free space when accessed via the desktop client. In other words, they show the amount of free space on the server's . driv...

Re: Several HDDs - all in the same folder for server

use "mount --bind" see http://docs.1h.com/index.php?title=Bind_mounts&oldid=492 (or google "mount --bind") Thanks to you also! This works fine but it reports the wrong 'free space' when I access my folder from a client and this prevents me from copying anything in. The videos disk is an empty 2TB d...

Re: Several HDDs - all in the same folder for server

1st I tried simply mounting the disks (using fstab) in one folder and then sharing that folder. This however caused problems with permissions and apparently it's conventional wisdom not to share the root directory of a hard drive. It's conventional wisdom not to share the root directory of the part...

Several HDDs - all in the same folder for server

Hi guys, Please help, I'm stuck. I have a server at home with a boot drive and a swap drive as well as 3 data disks. I would like, for the sake of simplicity, to have all three data disks appearing in one folder on the network. I know that LVM and JBOD etc would be options, but I'd prefer to stay aw...

Re: Grub error when I add my other disks in /etc/fstab

That Mint 17 disk (the old ssd) is now just a storage drive, there's not actually Mint 17 on there. Is this the problem? Anyways, I never get to the grub screen that I would choose two seperate distros on, it just says Grub failed. When I don't have the disks specified in fstab I only get Mint 18 an...

Re: Grub error when I add my other disks in /etc/fstab

Thanks Austin.Texas. FWIW, that's where the results.txt file ends, doesn't appear to have been truncated. Not by the forum at least. /boot/grub/grub.cfg is HUGE. Here goes: # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings fr...

Re: Grub error when I add my other disks in /etc/fstab

Hmmm, yes that works just fine. Does this maybe mean my grub issue isn't to do with fstab?

Then why does it only lose grub when I have other disks automounting?

Thanks for everything by the way Cosmo!

Re: Grub error when I add my other disks in /etc/fstab

I just did what I did with the previous install. sudo mkdir /disks/storage etc etc. The directories are all there ready to mounted into. I can even mount the disks into the right folders with jack@jack-desktop ~ $ sudo mount UUID=e3cc3003-0469-4577-9286-c0d95ed05cc8 /disks/backup if I want to, and t...

Re: Grub error when I add my other disks in /etc/fstab

Sorry for the confusion, so I could use the drives in the meantime I manually mounted them by double clicking the icons in nemo. Thanks Cosmo, but I'm not sure that's the cause. Grub error when I add my other disks in /etc/fstab

Hello all, I have a new install of Mint 18 Cinnamon on my new pc build. I installed it onto the M.2 SSd (after much ado with uefi) but now it boots just fine. The problem is, when I add my other hard drives in fstab it fails to boot. I get a "grub error, no such device UUID=3e8f4d5f-14dc-4a91-ac3a-7...

Re: BootMGR Missing

Yes, yes, I'm an idiot. Years of building pcs, messing with fstab, lots of hard disks in a system. The last one was / on the SSD and /home on a HDD. I'm used to this. And yet still, it was looking on the HDD for grub, which I'd handily placed on the SSD. I'll say it again: idiot. The only way I've m...

BootMGR Missing - SOLVED

Hello all, After being impressed with Cinnamon I decided to install it on my desktop instead of MATE. I also treated myself to a shiny new SSD too as I needed more space. Every time after I install I reboot and I get the message 'BootMGR Missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to Restart'. Online I have read...

Re: Wifi Icon Disappeared (and no idea how to connect)

Hello, I have done that, in fact I've tried every theme that's there. Just to be safe I changed to adwaita and then rebooted but no joy. :-( Seeing as the laptop is brand new do you think a reinstall would solve the problem? I'm not adverse to doing it but there's no point if it'll probably justt do...

Re: Wifi Icon Disappeared (and no idea how to connect)

Sorry for the delay, away with work again!

Do you mean the 'appearance' theme? Just the standard mint one, with a comix cursor.
