Re: How to remove KDE completely in Mint 15 KDE ISO

I usually reccommend against using the -f option with apt-get. It's pretty likely to break stuff if you arent careful, and usually isn't needed. Also, that grep will only list files with "kde" in it's name or description. Don't forget about the calligra office suite and other applications ...

Re: Clueless in Oregon: CLI greenhorn

You can ignore that warning. It doesn't do anything. If it really bugs you, you can check your software sources application and sources.list file for duplicates manually, or try the Y ppa manager: https://launchpad.net/y-ppa-manager The latter option has fixed the same issue for me in the past, as w...

Re: Still use floppy disks

I certainly don't miss pulling three 5 1/4 floppies out of one drive because someone thought inserting the next disk didn't require removing the previous one. I do miss them though. I used to be able to get one to fly through 2 doorways from one end of the house to the other (and those AOL CDs). In ...

Re: How to remove KDE completely in Mint 15 KDE ISO

If you want to remove all the config files, you will need to use "Purge" instead of "Remove". Removing the configuration files will not give you much more disk space, but could make it much more difficult to reinstall. I found this blog post, but you must edit the commands a bit ...

Re: I have Mint 14. What should I do in April?

"dist-upgrade" upgrades the kernel in addition to the same things as "upgrade". If you really want to do an in-place upgrade, here's a tutorial: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/62 . Just beware that stuff can break by upgrading it that way. Not to mention the huge do...

Re: I have Mint 14. What should I do in April?

Mint doesn't update from a repository. You have to reinstall (unless you want to go through a bunch of convoluted steps and still run the risk of a broken system). If you just backup your home folder, it should only take about an hour and a half to two hours to reinstall and start where you left off...

Re: I have Mint 14. What should I do in April?

I'm running Mint 15 KDE, and after enabling the kubuntu-updates repository on both, I can't tell too much of a difference (other than this isn't broken due to stupidity). You will not have Mint 16 KDE in April (and possibly not even Mint 16 Cinnamon), but you could always install KDE on the main edi...

Re: How to conect two monitors to ATI Radeon?

One of the things about the lshw command is that it gives too much info. Read up on the inxi command. The one you want to use for that information is: Inxi -G What specific model is your graphics card? And your new monitors don't have DVI ports? :? Is it too late to return them? One DVI and one VGA ...

Re: Making a copy of all files (including subdirectories)...

Not sure of a way to only copy files modified in the past month, but using cp with the -rfu flag should copy all files in all subfolders that are newer than the ones in the target directory. I'm sure there is a way to only copy files modified in the past month, but it will most likely require a few ...

Glad you found something you like. I know several other people who really like XFCE, for the exact reasons you mentioned. I prefer more fancy features, so I'll stick with KDE.

Are you sure it's not in the advanced keyboard settings? I'm not running Cinnamon or MATE right now, but it's the first thing you see in the KDE keyboard settings.

I believe it's in the keyboard settings. If it's not there, try looking in your BIOS settings or search Google.

Could you try a different pci slot? I had the same problem with a laptop card. Replacing it fixed the issue.

Re: Can you create partitions.....

You can create partitions, but I don't think you can resize active partitions to make room for the new ones. Since you haven't done too much yet, reinstalling might be the easiest (because you'll most likely be booting from the install disc anyway). Make sure to back everything up onto another drive...

Re: Cant configure IP address - Atheros chipset

Does your router have an IP reserved for the MAC (hardware) address of your card? I've had issues with that. Does the card work on the Mint 14 install disc? If it doesn't work there now, it might be dead.

Re: Has any ever used a print server????

You'll either have to input the IP address of the printer (including the port IIRC) or wait until the search finds it. I've always done the latter with my HP networked printers.

Re: Hangs on shutdown

Could you switch to a different virtual terminal and see what the issue is? The keybinding for that is [CTRL]+[ALT]+[F*] where the "F*" is one of the function keys. I believe the log should be in F1.

Re: UEFI bios boot options and linux installation

Did you install Mint via EFI or BIOS? It depends on how you launched the LiveUSB, and I believe it usually defaults to BIOS (at least it does on my ASUS K53E). If the BIOS is the same, press F12 when you boot then select the "EFI: usb0" or whatever it is. Not the "USB ***" option...
