Too many editions?

I know Linux is about choice, but is it possible that it has too many editions? KDE, Gnome, Unity, Xfce, Debian, Cinnamon, MATE. etc. Is it feasible to hope the communities could pool their resources and create one super-polished environment? I think together Linux has more developers and talent tha...

Re: 2 problems after switching to linux

About the hidden files, do you mean other HDDs and subsequent folder/files (if you have them shortcutted to desktop) are not appearing by default? If that's the case, Linux has the perplexing habit of not mounting drives by default. You have to download this app from Synaptics: ntfs-config. Configur...

Re: create partition

If you only want Linux, you can have just one partition, ext3 or ext4, set a root (/). Two if you want a swap partition for hibernation and sleep. Three if you want dual boot. I personally have two: ext3 for Linux and NTFS for Win7.

Re: Cinnamon Themes

I'm really not that all impressed with Cinnamon. I don't dislike it - it is fast and sleek. But, IMO it's not really all that easily customizable. Sure, you can change themes - but does that do? Changes the color of your Menu... not a whole lot else. That's not customization to me. Compiz and Cairo...

Functional Custom Trash Icon

I changed the trash icon using the icon's properties but the new icon isn't dynamic; it just shows whatever static image I selected (full or empty). And now I can't revert back to the theme's default that actually worked normally. The revert button (in properties) doesn't do anything and changing th...

Re: Improving Cinnamon

Speaking of CSS, I'm starting to think I need to change a file or something to make custom icons work properly... I put them in /usr/share/icons (I open icons as admin), but it doesn't work like in previous versions. I can see the new icon themes in Cinnamon Settings, but switching to them only chan...

Improving Cinnamon

I love Cinnamon. I'm starting to see how it can be the future of Mint. It looks like the old Gnome desktop while adding some of the pizazz people expect today. A few things still need improving, though, most of which you're probably aware of and working on. 1) The menu panel is missing setting optio...

Re: Cinammon or MATE on old-ish 1GB RAM netbook?

I tried both MATE and Cinnamon on a 7-year-old HP nx9420 (ATI Mobility x1600 vid card / 3 GB RAM). Naturally my ATI drivers aren't supported on Linux so I have to use whatever custom drivers are available, which makes my CPU run twice as hard. It's basically a throw of the dice whether I can cook eg...

I don't use swap anymore. I only need to put my laptop to sleep, and you don't need swap for that.

Re: google and linux !!!!

If Google were to create their own version of a Linux distro that would be the sweetest thing in the world. The OS would have a solid third spot on the market right off the bat.

Re: Windows 7 running noticeably quicker.

I gave Linux a shot after getting fed up of XP's inefficient driver support. Reinstalling a laptop with XP always involved a gazillion different drivers. Linux was a breath of fresh air with its out-of-the-box approach. But I have to admit Microsoft upped its game. W7 is a solid OS. I'd even venture...

I've never paid too much attention on which partition Windows or Mint is located. I simply first install Windows then Mint.

This is very interesting...I hope it takes off. I want a few to test for different projects (education/surveillance/vehicle). http://www.raspberrypi.org/ I'm messing with the debian release now. Any interesting stuff in Linux's future?

Just curious, is there anything interesting happening on the horizon in Linux (not just Mint)? We got Ubuntu trying to iron out Unity and Mint looking for the best way to keep the old Gnome look, but besides that are there any interesting projects in the works for the future? I dunno, a new OS/distr...
