Re: Mint 17.1 not detecting M.2 drive in an external enclosure

Drive password protected ?
If the machine is a thinkpad, you may have to boot into the bios and remove the password for the drive, before you can access it on another machine.

Re: Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED

Hi BobL. I think I would try the following before sending the scanner for repair: Try different Kernels. Older & Newer. Try connecting to another Linux machine that has firewire. Test your firewire with a different firewire connected device. Boot up a different Distro Live Disk (Fedora or Manjaro) a...

Re: Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED

Apologies BobL. You are right... I used my 4000 ED with my PC and the 1394 connection. It was my later 5000 ED that I used with USB.
I used VueScan with both (as well as an Epson Flatbed Scanner). Currently using a Cannon 9000F.

cheers

Re: Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED

Hi BobL. I was using a Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED for many years with Mint 17x, 18x and LMDE2. I used VueScan as the front end with excellent results. My 4000ED was USB but VueScan also supports the Firewire version. As long as you have the firewire interface running, it should just plug and play. cheer...

Or you could install VueScan. Never had any new scanner install issues and the interface has many more professional options.

Re: Security notice: Meltdown and Spectre

The major HW Manufacturers have released / (will release) patched UEFI BIOS's for their main stream products.
If the BIOS is patched, is an updated Kernel still a priority ?

Re: Recommend a hard drive?

If your Laptop can take a 9mm thick drive, I would suggest a WD Black 1Tb. Good price, 7200rpm with better throughput.
If you can only take a 7mm drive, then look at a SSD.

Re: <SOLVED> Nuke Entire Hard drive?

Hi Damien. Fully agree with what the others have suggested, but depending on the size of the drive can take a long time. Another strategy that I have found to be a bit quicker, is to reformat the whole drive to ext2, then create a formatted veracrypt container to fill the entire partition. Then dele...

Hi CafeCreme. A lot of information on the thinkwiki site is not so relevant for the newer series thinkpads.
What Mint OS are you running and what kernel are you using?

Re: Do Lenovo ThinkPads run well with Linux Mint?

Fully agree with the others. T Series Thinkpads (or E Series if you are on a budget) are the way to go. My current T460 (with the latest BIOS) is running LM18.2 Mate with 4.10 series kernel. Zero issues. The only suggestion I would make is to stick to the single embedded graphics models. Dual GPU ca...

florienb. As a test, try downgrading network manager and see if the connection becomes stable.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install network-manager=1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4

Re: notebook wakes up by itself from suspend

Couple of thoughts. Check that your BIOS has "Wake on Lan" disabled. Check your power management settings. Try disabling any hibernate options. Maybe set battery critical low option to "shutdown". When in suspend, one of my thinkpads seemed to morph from suspend to hibernate after a few hours. But i...

Re: Keyboard backlight blinking

Nazdreg you forgot to tell us your machine details, so it makes it hard to offer suggestions.
However..... I would try turning the machine off. Removing the battery for 10 min. Then replace the battery and let it charge for an hour.
Then try booting again.

Yep you found it. It's a very useful tool. You can also use it to check the smart data of the installed drives.
Don't forget to mark the thread "solved".

Or you could add gnome disks / disk-manager to your panel and use it to power off the drive, after un-mounting your VC volume.

Re: Think Pad T460 - Sierra EM7455 Not Working in Linux Mint 18.2

I assume you have checked that the SIM is active and not locked? Some ISPs want the PIN re-entered at regular intervals.
BTW there have been a lot of T460 BIOS bug fixes since V1.15. Mine is currently on V1.26. May be worth updating and reconfirming that the Sierra Card is active.

Try installing modem-manager and the GUI. It should help you see what is going on.
