Using video file players

Here's a real puzzler. Recently I found that I could no longer play any video files (MKV MP4, etc.) on Mate 19.3 using a ThinkPad T61. I had a saved SDD HD from a few days ago and booted up to find there was no problem on this one playing videos. My next step was to clone this HD onto a twin SDD. OK...

VPN Information

Does anyone know of a taskbar indicator or desktop one that tells the current status of your VPN connection. I saw a reference to one called PIA but have not yet tried it. I would like to know if I am connected at lease. I know about the little lock that shows up on the network icon, but it's a bit ...

[Solved} Re: Printer Problem

Dr. Google came to the rescue with this link:
https://www.zedonet.com/en_p_turboprint ... h=1&dist=0

Installed in a jiffy - works great - not free, but a reasonable price.

Printer Problem

After upgrading from 17.3 to 19.3 Mate I can no longer print. I hear a connection being made and then the paper starts feeding but nothing is printed. I can use the Simple Scanner without any probs though. My PC is a Thinkpad T-61 and the printer is an Epson xp-440 connected via USB.

Re: [1/2 Solved] Re: Taskbar font - size & color

I was able to change the font in the taskbar/panel by going to: "Menu/Appearance/Fonts/Application font:" and selecting the style and size of the font that is used in the taskbar. I have yet to find a way to pick the color though... search continues. Hmmm... i can't seem to find such an i...

Re: Taskbar font - size & color

If you've sorted out the font size, then to change the colour you could try my suggestion above but omitting most of the text and just using the last three lines. In other words, go to your home folder and make sure hidden files (those beginning with a dot) are visible (if they aren't, select "...

Re: Taskbar font - size & color

I now have a better grasp of what you're asking. Newer versions of Mate took away a lot of customization options. I'm not sure if what you want is possible with the version of Mate that comes with Mint 19.3. The developers of Mate are following this "dumbing-down" approach a lot of other ...

Re: Taskbar font - size & color

That particular fix worked because 17.3 used an older version of Mate than 19.3. The fix (if there is one) you need to use today would be in the gtk-3.0 folder. Look in there and there should be a file called settings.ini . I tried changing the name to .gtkrc-3.0 but it didn't do the trick. Here's ...

Taskbar font - size & color

When I was using LM 17.3 I was able to change the color of the font in my taskbar by adding a file called ".gtkrc-2.0" when added to my home file in LM 19.3 has no effect. Anyone know what the fix is? Basically I want to change the color from black to bright yellow. I would also like to in...

Taskbar Font

I was able to tweak my taskbar using 17.3 so that the font was brighter but the method I used does not work with 19.3 Mate. Anyone know a fix?

[Solved] Re: Vivaldi Does Not Appear in Menu [Solved ... Sorta]

I just upgraded to 19.3 from 17.3 and am going through the tedium of software installing. Vivaldi wasn't listed in the Software Manager so I did a command line install and could not find any reference to Vivaldi in my Menu. I created a Launcher and just put "vivaldi" (no quotes) into the C...

[SOLVED] Re: Having to say GoodBye to Rosa...

Great Success! After having probs even installing 19.2 or 19.3 to the PC ram I decided to try 20 and it went smoothly and surprisingly fast. Now I am back on 17.3 (different SSD) and am currently backing up files/software to an external drive. Thanks everyone for your always terrific help! Note: I e...

Re: Having to say GoodBye to Rosa...

OK, booted the 19.2 DVD. Or I should say tried to. After the LM logo splash with the interminable 5 dot back and forth highlighting it changed to the error msg scroll. Boy, did I have 'em. Upshot is it kinda froze so I abandoned ship. I just downloaded another 19.2 iso copy and will try again.

Re: Having to say GoodBye to Rosa...

Thanks for the tip. I will install 19.2, if I like it I will upgrade to 19.3 before loading the software I like. I was going to use Gparted to freshly format to NTFS before starting. Good move?

Re: Having to say GoodBye to Rosa...

Yes, Mate is the look that works for me. I will run a new 19.3 and test drive it.... Just came across this and actually on that machine you should probably use 19.2, not 19.3. 19.2 ships with the 4.15 kernel and 19.3 has the 5t.0 kernel. The 4.15 is a much better choice for old hardware like yours....

Re: Having to say GoodBye to Rosa...

After using Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa for years i understand I must move on. I went through the upgrade steps to 18 and found I was freezing up quite often. (actually freezing/restarting) Next step was upping from this to 18.3 which bombed out - never got there. Now I have decided to do a fresh install....

Re: Having to say GoodBye to Rosa...

Yes, Mate is the look that works for me. I will run a new 19.3 and test drive it. I currently run a dual with Win-10, but as I have not used Windows in such a long time my thought is to put it on a separate SSD, just in case I have to go that route. The SSDs are so cheap now too. Also, I have a VBox...
