Wi-Fi Extenders

Anyone have info on these? When I’m in a part of my house that’s a long distance from my router my Wi-Fi strength sucks. I am currently using an extender with so-so results. It’s a Macard 300 Mbps wireless repeater.

Making .mkv files from DVDs

I have hundreds of DVDs. Remember those? I know of a way to convert these to .mkv files using Handbrake, but it is VERY SLOW. Anyone know of another way? I've also used DVDFab, but it's a Windows program and I won't go there.

Mouse cursor size

Is there a way to install a mouse cursor that is larger than what you can choose from the setup?
I know about choosing DMZ and moving the slider to the right, but that's still not large enough for my 80 plus years eyesight!

External Hard Drives

Currently using external hard drives and wanted to know what is the optimum format file type. My main drive is ext4. These are all SDD drives. One is located in my docking station and is fat32 and the external ones are USB connected, one is fat32 and the other is ntfs. Should one system be used over...

Re: Can't Empty Trash

I ran Properties on one of those files and saw that they are located in an attached external HD. Trying everything does not erase them. They don't create any problem, but it's just my nature to want to clean this up. That HD was giving me some trouble so my next project is to offload what is worth k...

Can't Empty Trash

I have about 180kb (6 files) in my trash and cannot delete them. I tried going into the system as root, but the items don't show up in trash there. When I click on "Empty Trash", nothing happens, but when I try to delete the files one at a time this is the msg that I get.

Desktop Clock

Currently using Linux Mint 20.3 Una on my Thinkpad T61.
I'm looking for a simple, small (1 inch square) desktop analog clock. The taskbar one is getting harder to read as each year passes (84). I don't want any bells and whistles: not timer, stopwatch, date, etc. something like this...

Set Screen Blanking in Startup

I know how to change my blanking once I am up and running using a shell script, but I would like to have this be automatically done during the boot. I use the following shell script once running: #! /bin/sh. xset dpms 0 0 600 I tried adding this ".sh" file to /etc/init.d/ (as root) but it ...

DVD copying

I tried using K3b to copy a DVD I had made and it bombs. It will copy the files to my PC (10 minutes), but when I replace the DVD with a blank it huffs and puffs and then reports an error. I tried it with several DVDs and blanks, no dice. This software was my goto with earlier versions of LM. My cur...

How long does it usually take for a new version to be made available via the Update Manager?

Re: External HDDs not recognized at startup.

Tried removing a device and got this line in "dmesg":
[ 240.039922] usb 1-4.1: USB disconnect, device number 5

Does that tell me the dock is still OK?
This is new stuff for me.

External HDDs not recognized at startup.

My system includes a docking station into which I have 3 hard drives plugged in. Two are connected via USB and the third uses an Ultrabay slot. They always showed up upon booting. Lately I have had to unplug/replug them. I haven't made any changes in the OS lately (upgrades, etc.). Anyone have any i...

Re: Backing Up

I found info about this. If the item(s) are greyed out they are already removed.
Sure enough, ny backup no longer has these old kernels and it took 20 minutes less!

Re: Backing Up

Thanks Pjotr...
I deleted one of the kernels and when it had finished I went back to "View/Linux Kernels" to zap one more and after the list had populated the Remove Kernels button was greyed out. Any idea what I'm doing wrong. Thanks again for your help. Here's the shot.

[Solved] Backing Up

I use Clonezilla and do frequent backups of my HDD. Every time there's a kernel update it seems the old (/boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-54-generic) is saved and becomes part of the backup which means it takes longer. Do I really need these older files?
Here's a screenshot of that activity.

[Solved] Can no longer "switch user"...

For the very rare occasions when I needed to I was able to use Menu/logout/switch user and sign in as root. Now with my Linux upgrades I get 2 choices: localhost and paulie. I know what the root password is (I actually changed it successfully) but that does not work in localhost. My own password (fo...
